The Firemen (SNES, 1994)
Graphics-7.5 Sound-6.5 Control-8 Challenge-7.5
Level Design-7 Frustration-7 Fun-7 Originality-6
Overall Score-7
+
Fairly original concept
Strafing (hold l or r)
All abilities are useful
Decent teammate AI
Pretty fast paced
Good bosses overall
Nice in-game cutscenes
Decent dialogue
"Smart bombs"
Play as an old man with a blue moustache
+/-
Some dialogue during gameplay
No jumping
Your character is somewhat slow to turn while firing
Plays very similarly to New Ghostbusters II (NES)
Rescuing people=health refill
-
A bit repetitive and shallow (no puzzles or tactical elements)
Short (7 stages)
No alternate weapons or tools
Annoying alarm sounds for both citizens to rescue and low health
Some cheap hits (traps)
Comment:
This one plays almost like a sequel to New Ghostbusters (NES), but with a fire fighter theme latched onto it. It's really well done, with good AI and a decent challenge. It's just very short for a full release from 1994 (7 straightforward stages) and doesn't explore the experience of being a fire fighter at any great depth, instead using the theme as some extra flavor to a basic action game layout.
