Super Turrican 2 (SNES, 1995)
Graphics-8.5 Sound-8 Control-8 Challenge-7.5 Story-5
Level Design-7.5 Frustration-7.5 Fun-7.5 Originality- 6.5
Overall Score-7.5
+
Excellent variety
Technically impressive (though some parts look pretty tacky now)
Huge bosses
Fast paced
Ride vehicles
Grapple hook (more useful than in prequels)
Difficulty options (hard mode basically increases enemy HP though)
Good bosses overall
Influenced by Super Star Wars and Contra
Good sound effects (surround sound?)
-
Impossible to avoid picking up some weapons
Somewhat unbalanced weapons
Some effects look a bit tacky (gradient sky, multicolour laser)
Some ideas feel a bit gimmicky (some segments are underdeveloped or over too quick)
Trial & error (chase scene on the corroding power plant, train in space scene, dune-like bug train scene, rail shooter sequences with laser walls)
Somewhat loose scrolling (leads to cheap hits in some areas where you walk left and right)
A few cheap hits (inside the monsters mouth boss, ray fish boss, underwater, enemies appearing at the edge of a platform you’re jumping to)
Some slowdown
Tedious underwater level
Sluggish controls in the Axelay-style level
Hard to tell which parts of the final boss hurt you
Ugly CGI cutscenes
