Super Spy Hunter (NES, 1991) - WIP
Graphics-7.5 Sound-8 Control-7.5 Challenge-8.5 Story-?
Level Design-6 Frustration-9 Fun-5.5 Originality-6
Overall Score-5.5
+ Fairly technically impressive (3d effect on the bridge, curved roads, some large sprites, smooth and fast at times, the music), bosses with multiple forms, auto-aiming gun drones power up, pretty good variation, upgradeable lifebar, smart bombs, boat and plane segments,
+/- No timer or fuel, some one hit kills, acceleration control (can decelerate to a stand still anywhere except during boss fights which have a fixed speed), checkpoints (fairly frequent), some very situational sub weapons (oil), auto-turning at curved road, repeats two bosses before the final one,
-
Annoying knockback to stand still when hitting a wall from the front
End up too close to the top of the screen when accelerating
Plenty of slowdown
Too hard to catch power ups in some levels and you lose your upgrades after losing a life
Steering glitch at the quicksand segment (stops working if you touch the edge of the screen)
Trial & error (occasional turns with no warning sign, boss patterns, need to drive fast to jump at ramps, some maze parts where the level loops if you take the wrong path), uneven difficulty curve (mostly easy levels and tough bosses, some easy boss patterns, some parts are much easier if you just drive slower and there's often no penalty for doing it), unavoidable damage? (red cars in third level), no alternate main weapon?, repetitive airplane part, somewhat weak ending, no difficulty options,
