STUN Runner (ARC, 1989)

Overall Score-7.5

+
Polygonal graphics (cars and track)
Fast
Pretty smooth framerate and draw distance overall (sometimes gets pretty choppy)
Race against the clock/shooter hybrid
Boost pads and segments which slow you down
Smart bombs (shockwave style, clears otherwise invulnerable enemies), round tunnels which you can loop sideways in (similar to Wipeout or Sonic 2's special stages) - use the opposite wall to gain more speed in turns, tunnels with turns and slopes, hover car which falls apart gradually as you take damage, jumps via ramps, some courses have alternate paths, get tips on the next course between courses (sometimes useless though), difficulty options which change the course layouts (three levels), can aim upwards (some air enemies), pretty good voice samples

+/-
Course map is only shown before racing
Very forgiving steering aid in turns
Can finish the game (Novice/default) without beating the final course
Can't fall or fly off the course,

-
Overly sensitive steering makes it too hard to stay still on walls/curved surfaces
Tips pause the game for a couple of seconds (can't press to skip?)
1-player only
Trial & error
Pop-up
Stiff upward aiming, pretty unforgiving hit detection on smart bomb power ups,

Notes:
-Save states don't work in Mame
-Harder without a steering wheel?
