Soukyu Gurentai Otokuyo (SAT, 1997)
Graphics-8 Sound-8.5 Control-8 Challenge-9* Story-4
Level Design-8 Frustration-9 Fun-8* Originality-6
Overall Score-8
*1-player
+
Three different ships with different traits
Fast paced and intense
Good variation
Difficulty options
Targeting system (Galactic Attack-style but with two different settings for each ship)
Respawn on the spot with three bombs
Smart bombs
2-player coop mode
Ranking system (accuracy?)
Nice level transitions and boss introductions
+/-
Can't gain new credits?
Digitized sprites (uneven quality, some great animation)
Many bullet hell segments
-
Pretty simple weapon system (the three weapons you start with is all you have for the rest of the game except for added missiles at a certain upgrade level, upgradeable spread/strength)
Power ups bounce upwards then fall down with increasing speed (making them very hard to catch when the action is intense)
No manual speed adjustment (different ships have different speeds)
Trial & error (several fast and unpredictable attacks, boss patterns)
Uneven difficulty (second boss, naval base, parts of final stage are particularly tough segments)
Generic ending (default mode)
Targeting mode is reset each time you die (to the weaker weapon with better range)
A few unavoidable attacks?
Sometimes hard to tell bullets from explosions
Notes:
-aka Soukyuugurentai or Terra Diver
