Snake Rattle 'n Roll (NES)
Graphics-7.5 Sound-7.5 Control-6.5 Challenge-8
Level Design-6.5 Frustration-9 Fun-(6) Originality-6
Overall Score-6
+ Unique style and atmosphere, innovative mechanics (grow your snake to open the exit), bonus levels (pretty lame), hidden items, your character casts a shadow when jumping, respawn on the spot with no body loss, warps, good enemy variation, 2-player coop (seems to make the game more frustrating)
+/- Time limit (there are time increasing power ups), negative power ups (reverse movement), instant death attacks, somewhat forgiving hit detection
- Awkward steering (d-pad buttons set to diagonals), falling from a height of three blocks kills you, can't jump when on streaming water, many frustrating jumps later on (disappearing carpet, geysers), need to touch diamonds (points) and 1-ups to pick them up while other stuff is picked up via your snake's tongue, some trial & error (you can climb waterfalls, traps, enemies which can only be hurt by jumping on them), pretty short (ten levels + a boss fight)
