Panzer Dragoon (SAT, 1995/PC, 1997) - 3D Rail Shooter
-Unique atmosphere (abstract design on enemies, buildings and NPCs), auto-targeting/lock-on on multiple enemies, cinematic scenes incorporated pretty well with gameplay, you can change your view to shoot in each cardinal direction (front, sides, back), great bosses overall, good variation, pretty nice intro (drawn out and with some dated animation though), good framerate and decent draw distance, wizard mode/secret mode cheat makes the game play faster, secret episode 0 level - survival mode level with draining health that you can replenish by killing enemies, two unlockable weapons via a cheat code, basic ranking system, rolling attack when low on health (double tap a diagonal direction while locking on and then release) - unlimited rolling attack mode via a cheat code, dodge move (double tap then hold), three behind the dragon view camera angles, 180 degree turn move (l+r), space harrier/no dragon mode, easier JP ver.
Magic Knight Rayearth (SAT, 1995) - ARPG/AA, TD View, A couple of vertical shoot 'em up boss fights
-Three different characters (different weapons and spells, different comments on examined objects) that you can switch between on the fly, separate diary entries for each major scene, some good dungeon designs, hint system (advice from Ferico), mixes in a lot of anime FMV, lighting and transparency effects, animated character portraits during dialogue with important NPCs, fast dialogue speed and overall good flow to the script, minor puzzle solving, charge attacks (can run while charging), good animation overall, sometimes humourous (Working Designs), six save slots, some good bosses (tree of life, pink haired villain finale), sometimes a teleporter is created at the end of a finished dungeon, nice spell effects, can read the antagonist's henchman's (Innova) diary, checkpoint before the final boss (point of no return before the second to final boss), automatic movement between areas on world map (you can control it only after having visited the area you want to go towards by pressing Z in an area), get a dash ability halfway into the game or so, you can hit enemies from a different height (creates some safe spots though enemies respawn if you move away far enough), MP slowly regenerates, impressive music overall

Rayman (SAT/PS1/JAG, 1995/PC, 1996) - Action Platformer/Collectathon, Some scrolling shooter levels

1996 WIP:
NiGHTS Into Dreams... & Christmas Nights (SAT, 1996) - Flight-Based Racing/Acrobatics/Platformer Hybrid, 2-Player Vs. mode,
-Innovative gameplay (part air racing with collecting and fighting enemies - when time runs out you're transformed back into the girl or boy and have to collect the scattered blue/gold spheres then destroy a pod and return a special sphere to Night's pod (3D platformer part), spinning as Nights creates a force field which sucks up collectables, boss fights/puzzles), unique atmosphere and premise, memorable locations (mystic forest), wide screen, two "campaigns" - one for the girl and one for the boy, pretty fast paced, one of the first console games with analogue controls, instant replay after beating a world, ranking system (A-F per course) which sort of works as a metaphor for the kids' confidence, go through multiple ring sections quickly to get combo points, do 'stunts' in power loop mode (yellow trace) for extra points (pretty shallow but still), hidden routes and items, the nightopians (NPCs), the game doesn't explain too much about Nights and his/her world, nice twist at the end, play as Nights the genderless jester/aero acrobat, player select defaults on the girl, you can collect spheres as the girl or boy before freeing Nights to give you a head start (not that fun to do though),
Dragon Force (SAT, 1996) - RTS/TBS Hybrid (time limited RT turns and battles with pausing)
-Up to 200 troops in a battle without slowdown, up to 5 generals and 500 troops per army/party, non-linear structure (the world map is open to you at once though some locations are much better defended than others), 8 different playable factions (2 of them need to be unlocked by finishing the game) with their own perspective on the story, early hero focused RTS, 14 general classes, terrain effects, level up your generals and castles (increases their recruits capacity and defense bonus, use fortify and/or have the right generals in them (70+ intelligence)), strategize between battles (domestic affairs phase - award generals (gain award points by winning battles; increases their capacity for commanding one unit type with each one and makes them more loyal, can be given to any general regardless of who actually earned it), talk to your generals and captives (can recruit some enemy generals), search locations (items, recruitable generals), view other countries, equip generals with items; recruit troops in castles), some funny/nerdy battle dialogue ("curse this infernal eye patch!", "alas, I have so very much to learn about strategy..."), good animation, character portraits during dialogue (not animated though), speed up text on a per paragraph/text box basis, nice spell/special attack effects, can repair castle ruins, good interface in some ways (can release soldiers back into a castle's recruitment pool to let other generals recruit them, can convert one unit type to another at castles, shortcuts for command and special attack menus in battle, overview menu of armies/parties and generals on the map screen - can't sort the list of generals though?, can quickly move the battle camera between your and the enemy's general or to your troops), can gain more than one level per battle (rare though), public support mechanic (potentially more award points), formations (most of them aren't that useful though), pretty good visual variety, some optional and hidden generals, nice intro and ending cutscenes, pretty nice artwork stills during other cutscenes, diplomacy (very crude and with a high risk of losing the army/party leader's troops - each character seems to draw from a limited stock of generic responses that don't always fit each other properly), multiple save slots per game (time info) - can only save during the domestic phase though, perma-death (a char generally won't die from losing a duel though and can be healed with an item later if badly hurt), some darker themes (Zanon's suicide, Goldark's older brother), generals don't need to be in the main castle to be talked to or awarded during the domestic phase, some generals will either object to you sending them into battle or demand to go first and some can leave if you don't use them or reward them enough, a castle's level can decrease simply from defending even if you did great (to avoid turtling I guess), you need to use specific routes when traveling between locations (adds a bit more tactical depth and challenge), some magic/special attacks need to be timed to do good damage while others don't, time limit on battles (battles end in a draw if neither general is killed), enemy general levels will be three levels lower than your highest leveled general besides the ones that gain levels from battles, no character class or specials customization (can have them use new unit types using items though), formations are the only way to split your one big squad of soldiers into smaller ones,
Tomb Raider (SAT/PS1/PC, 1996) - 3D Maze Platformer/TPS Hybrid, PoP-style 3D Platformer
-Innovative controls (jump in four directions, context sensitive action button, auto-targeting in combat (Lara will turn her upper body to be able to fire while kiting an enemy), side stepping, flip (180 degree turn) move, walk toggle (run as default) - walking lets you not fall over ledges, look around by holding a button), grab onto ledges PoP style, pretty atmospheric for the time (good sound design with music changes from silence to foreboding ambient to hectic for encounters or certain events, makes you feel isolated and vulnerable), some cool encounters (bear, t. rex, doppelganger), skippable cutscenes, nice tutorial (voiced tour around Lara's house; except it doesn't show how to fight or pick up items), fairly varied death animations, save anywhere on PC?, some stats are displayed after beating a level, new gear sometimes shows on Lara's model,
Sakura Taisen (SAT, 1996/PC, 1999/DC, 2000) - SRPG/Dating?
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei (SAT, 1996) - Rail Shooter
-Mysterious atmosphere (experimental music with folk Asian elements, abstract enemies and NPCs), wide screen mode, decent story involving genetic engineering and human/animal bonding, upgradeable lock-on, cinematic scenes incorporated well with gameplay, smart bombs (charged by killing enemies with the standard shot), level up system based on rank (hit rate, route selection, completion), alternate routes within the levels, great bosses, fantastic end boss, good variation, save between levels, unlimited continues
