Nintendo World Cup/Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball-bu Soccer-hen (NES, 1990)
Graphics-8 Sound-8 Control-7 Challenge-
Level Design-7 Frustration-7.5 Fun-7 Originality-7
Overall Score-7
+
Great art direction with expressive sprites
Comical tone
4-player vs. and 2-player co-op
Pre-game tactics (positions, various AI behaviors)
Orders during game (tackle or pass)
Special moves (bicycle kick, headbutt, super shots (controllable ball (curling), zig zag motion, etc – triggered with A+B or moving a certain number of steps before shooting) and tackling/sliding
Each team has its own type of super shot
There’s a field map showing where on your (and the second player’s) avatar is
+/-
Semi-random chance of goalie blocking a super shot (players have different stats here which unfortunately aren’t shown while changing positions in the menu)
Seems to always be better to tell everyone to tackle opponents and to shoot by themselves
It’s possible to knock out almost the entire opposing team by tackling them repeatedly
Using a bicycle kick on a ball that’s traveled quite far in the air makes the move stronger?
No difference between tackle and slide?
You are limited to 5 super shots per half of a game
Running super shot is performed by taking a certain number of steps before shooting (differs between teams, not shown by the game, on team USA it differs between each player on the team for some reason)
There’s also different kicks between different teams?
It’s possible to score from over half the playing field with a super shot
It’s also fairly easy to stand right at the goal line and score with bicycle kicks since player passes have perfect accuracy
-
Can’t see the ball or other players on the map screen
Can’t switch between players?
Camera problems (doesn’t center the ball when you tell someone to pass near the goal so it’s hard to tell where it is since you can’t see the shadow (unless the player is passing from the north) – makes aligning your special move harder)
Weird physics when doing the bicycle kick move as west germany (ball goes diagonally down then back up in a zig zag motion so you easily miss the goal)
Some odd color choices (red skin)
Poor control over which player you want to pass the ball to
Some flicker and slowdown
Can’t tell the AI to tackle/slide without doing it yourself
Can’t tackle while the ball is in the air
No explanation on how super shots work (it helps to look instead of listening to the steps when doing the running one)
Doesn’t show how many HP each player has left
Enemy AI keeps passing KO’d players
Notes:
-Some physics bugs (rare)
-MD version:
Adds a charge meter that powers ups any move but overheats the player if you hold down the button for too long
Maps special move to its own button
Lets you select any team in 2-player vs.
Plays smoother and faster
Somewhat harder from the get go
