N64 Games That Were Innovative and/or Ahead of Their Time
1996:
Super Mario 64 (N64, 1996) - 3D Platformer/Platform Adventure-lite, Collectathon
-Innovative gameplay (third person 3D platformer with controllable camera, mostly non-linear structure),
-New moves that are fun to use once you learn them (sliding and stomping (Yoshi’s Island – can be used to avoid fall damage here), triple jumping, running jump, backflip (two types), dive jump, wall jump – this one’s a little awkward at times though due to camera problems, punch and kick) - in a way these replace most of the power ups from previous games
-Save feature (save after each finished level or collected star)
-Good variation (varies up the pacing a bit with more linear boss levels (should've had more levels like these though))
-Mario is more expressive than ever before
-You can revisit the bosses/special enemies you’ve beaten by picking their star when re-entering the level (for example in lvl 1 you can steal the koopa’s shell and use it like a skateboard of sorts)
-Can exit finished levels via the pause menu (however it’s a bit annoying how you’re teleported to the beginning of the castle hub instead of right outside the current level)
-Minor stealth element (sneak past sleeping enemies – Toejam & Earl, Metal Gear)
-Metal mario power up (walk on the sea floor, invulnerability) – not used that much though
-Pretty good draw distance (occasionally lacking when going for 100 coins)
-Some fun new gimmicks (the cannons, wet/dry world, snowman land ice wall puzzles, etc.)
-Fast dialogue
-Flight (wing cap – need to hit a hidden switch to be able to get it in the levels it’s placed though and it’s harder to gain height than before)
-Each collected coin restores 1 HP here
-Vanish cap (move through certain walls - Dragon Slayer 2?, invulnerability) - barely used though
-Dynamic movement: Walk or run based on how far you pull/push the analogue stick
Mario Kart 64 (N64, 1996) - 3D Kart Racing, 4-player? vs. mode
-Eight different characters, sound queues on power ups (when a shell is near or someone is invincible), time trial mode, pretty fun power ups (homing shell, ghost, invincibility, lightning), drifting (jump then slide after landing, SMK?) and jumping, pretty good track variation, boost start move (time it right), randomized and unbalanced power ups (you usually get the stronger ones when falling behind)
Pilotwings 64 (N64, 1996) - 3D Aircraft Sim/Stunts, Photography Sim (some hangglider missions)
Wonder Project J2 (N64, 1996) - P&C Adventure
Wave Race 64 (N64, 1996) - 3D Water Scooter Racing
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (N64, 1996) - TPS/Vehicle Combat Sim
Killer Instinct Gold (N64, 1996) - Fighting

Eikou no St Andrews (N64, 1996) - Sports (Golf Sim)
1997 WIP:
GoldenEye 007 (N64, 1997) - FPS, 4-Player w/ Split-screen (teams or ffa)
-Stealth elements (Strife, Metal Gear 1-2)
-Objective-based level design (MechWarrior, System Shock, Dark Forces, Strife)
-Location-based hit detection (MechWarrior?, Battletech)
-Fairly impressive music for the system
-Additional objectives that change the general flow/route through levels in a big way on higher difficulties ()
-More advanced enemy AI in some ways (could react to another enemy being shot - Strife, behaviors like playing dead or going for an alarm switch to call on reinforcements; patrol patterns - Metal Gear, Strife)
Star Fox 64 (N64, 1997) - 3D Rail Shooter, Arena Battle Mode (4-Player Vs)
-Three different routes with varying difficulty and you can switch between two of them mid-way through (the ways in which to unlock the harder ones are pretty vague though)
-Good variation
-Free range mode (arena battles, similar to Star Fox 2)
-Manages to be quite cinematic without interrupting gameplay (battle arenas for boss fights, many voiced comments during gameplay, camera angles and music changes)
-New vehicles (tank, sub)
-Some innovative level design (lava level)
-Target lock on function (get bonus points through combos; Galaxy Force and Panzer Dragoon?)
-Hidden routes (SF1)
-Some nice effects (bombs)
-Funny dialogue
-Good, comedic voice acting overall (can get annoying at times due to your buddies being almost useless in battle, Slippy is annoying in general)
-Extendable life bar in a shooter (collect gold rings)
-Decent-good bosses overall (some are way too easy)
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon (N64, 1997) - 3D Action Adventure (Zelda-like), Mixes in other gameplay styles (auto-scrolling large robot/impact bomber level, large robot FP view boss duels), A few mini-games
-Plays like a more straightforward Zelda game w/ manual jumping (minor puzzles, exploration-based but gated, some persistent tool/spell-based progression (most are borrowed such as bombs and high jump (Metroid)), split town/dungeon (castle) structure, shops, basic stat upgrades (HP and attack power), fewer tools+puzzles and more action-focused bosses?)
-Bizarre/silly humour (sit com, slap stick, Japanese)
-Semi-transparent mini-map of the current sub area in towns and overworlds but not in dungeons. No full overview map of towns/the overworld while there is one you can find for dungeons and overworld/journey areas (however it doesn't show your avatar's exact location)
-Four different playable characters that you can switch between on the fly (they control mostly the same but only Ebisumaru and Sasuke can attack upwards (only while crawling as Ebisumaru though) and each one has a different set of weapons and a unique spell, each one also has a special move or tool)
-Can block enemy projectiles using your own (coin throw) or with Yae's sworld shield move
-Basic attack combos (press attack three times, TMNT/Golden Axe?) and charge shots (Shadowland?)
-Teleport to visited towns with the flute (Ys, Zelda 1 sort of) but not outside of dungeons
-3D grappling hook (works like in Zelda 3)
-Can cling to and climb ledges (Z; sometimes inconsistent?) - Prince of Persia, Jumpman
-Some interesting spells/tools/attacks (gain healing items from enemies by using a certain weapon (meat saw-hammer), camera item lets you solidify ghosts and see hidden objects (similar to Zelda/Metroid), mini-form as Ebisumaru (Wonder Boy 3?)), underwater swimming/mermaid form as Yae, freeze shot - Sasuke (MM1/Metroid, can't stand on most frozen enemies here though)
-Some interesting mechanics (dynamic movement - tap to tiptoe/tap harder to walk/press fully to run mechanic (Tomb Raider?), can lock onto enemies but only with Yae's bazooka (similar to Tomb Raider except you can't circle around the enemy and have the camera lock onto it here) - After Burner?, weight-sensitive floating platforms in the second dungeon - later used in OoT)
-Three vocal tracks in the OST and in the JP version the intro is voiced
-Crawl move returns (Ganbare Goemon 1 SNES)
-Some memorable locations (the submarine dungeon)
-Can unlock a giant robot duel mode boss rush (collect all silver dolls/HP upgrade pieces)
-Shared HP and gear for all chars - TMNT?
-Thieves in towns (can take back some money by hitting them but after that they speed up) - Goemon 1 SNES?
-Save points (inns and outside dungeons, one slot per game) and a few health restoration points (hot baths)
-9999 max money capacity
-Deteriorating armor items - Rogue, Zeliard
-Can swim up some waterfalls but not others

J.League Dynamite Soccer 64 (N64, 1997) - Sports
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (N64, 1997) - FPS w/ Action Adventure elements
-Fast and smooth gameplay overall (30 fps, framedrops are pretty rare)
-Toggleable mini-map/map overlay (auto-mapper, transparent surfaces but lines depicting the room you're in are not (they're also neon green or white, lines for further away rooms are semi-transparent), 2D top down view only - lower floors have a different color)
-Climbing and swimming
-Many hidden paths and items (decent-pretty good (levels 5-7) spatial awareness puzzles)
-Good animation (enemies pivot when changing directions) and some nice visual effects (portals, fire traps)
-Weapon inventory can be cycled both ways
-Separate sfx and music volume sliders
-Some neutral creatures/animals (shoot for HP) - Super Metroid
-Alternate ammo types for some weapons - SS1
-Pretty good tutorial (optional, interactive, frequent checkpoints, instructions are text only and pause the gameplay though)
-Have to kill enemies with the knife or regular arrows for permanent lifebar upgrades to have a chance to appear and they tend to be rare (in one level I found several in one spot though))
-Temporary "slow down the enemies"/"spiritual invincibility" power up - SS1
-Can replay beaten levels (most things seem to stay as you've left them besides the maps) - MM1
-The grenade launcher lets you reach some previously unreachable rooms in previous levels (optional items)
-Some fun weapons (exploding arrows, grenade launcher, quad rocket launcher, fusion cannon (similar to BFG or a smart bomb) - only holds 2 shots though, chronoscepter - laser cannon (need to find 8 pieces to use it though and you only get three shots))
-Some good bosses (level 5 giant insect, level 7 cyborg t-rex, final boss)
-Cyborg dinosaurs in later levels - Dino Riders
-Partially non-linear structure after the first level (gain access to 2 levels at a time via a small hub area until level 6 where it becomes linear, minor backtracking to previous levels for optional items)
-Frequent checkpoints
-Right/left-handed option
-Native american protagonist
-"Double tap sideways jump" move
-Can change the opacity of the HUD but not the mini-map
-Levels sometimes wrap around and make you return to an earlier sub area where the next gate leading forward has been opened (loopback structure, similar to Metroid and Zelda games)
-Decent comic book giving some backstory in the manual (should've been in the game as well) - Rad Gravity
Duke Nukem 64 (N64, 1997) - FPS

1998 WIP:
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64, 1998) - 3D Action Adventure, TP view (FP aiming mode)
-Context sensitive actions (pushing/climbing blocks, reading signs, climbing ladders, entering narrow paths/holes, etc.) - Shinobi, Zelda 3
-Z-targeting (a fairy (navi) locks on to enemies when nearing them and you can circle around them while looking at them)
-Some good puzzles (forest temple's twisting rooms and falling roof with holes, light reflection in the spirit temple, floating platforms in the water temple, ganon's castle, using one chicken to hover jump to others in Kakariko, you can find skulltulas by listening for them)
-More distinct dungeons throughout than in ALttP, pretty nice ambient design (you can hear which location certain creatures are in and battle music starts and stops dynamically when near enemies)
-Basic music element (play three notes of a song on an ocarina to cast spells, unlock doors or contact certain NPCs - no regard to beat or length of notes but still pretty cool (see Monster World III (MD) for an earlier example)
-New friendly race (Gorons) and the Zoras (who are good here) have more personality and lore, much more expressive characters
-Satisfying feedback from attacking enemies and from bombs
-Dynamic movement: Walk or run based on how far you pull/push the analogue stick - Mario 64, Mystical Ninja 64
-You can also make your own short ditty and record it as one of the songs (Scarecrow song))
-Horseback riding (about a third of the way through) - can shoot arrows while on it and there's an archery range mini-game using the feature
-Warp magic (dungeons only) and warp songs (dungeon entrances, temple of time)
-Time travel element (kid/adult time periods, plant seeds as a kid and then use the grown plant as an adult to reach new places (similar to Magic of Scheherazade), Spirit temple entrance) - unfortunately you can only travel back and forth in the temple of time (should've worked like in ALttP)
-Spirit temple entrance) - unfortunately you can only travel back and forth in the temple of time (should've worked like in ALttP)
-New responses from NPCs when equipping masks (some say the same thing though) as well as small hidden bonuses
-Some sequence breaking through more advanced techniques (bomb jump, invincibility frame jump (go through firewalls), longer jump by rolling before jumping and then attacking mid-jump?) - plenty more using glitches
-If an arrow passes through a torch it is set ablaze
-More interesting hookshot uses (mainly due to the 3D level design)
-Scarecrow song can be used to spawn a scarecrow to swing to with the hookshot but only in certain spots (some places where Navi moves to and turns green but you can't "check" with the A button)
-Rumble pack secret finding mechanic (vibrates when near some secrets like hidden holes)
-More open ended structure after becoming an adult and beating the forest temple (gerudo fortress - after epona (don't need to beat the forest temple?), bottom of the well - after time travel, water temple - after iron boots+bow, spirit temple - after longshot+bow, shadow temple - after lens+bow+fire temple (and longshot?), gerudo training - after longshot+hover boots)
-New things to catch in a bottle (bug and poe/ghost, blue fire; no bees though)
-Ice floe physics (Mario 64)
-New gear (hover boots, iron boots, underwater breathing (blue tunic) and heat resistance (red tunic), lens of truth (shows fake walls and invisible paths over pits), longshot (hookshot upgrade), manually aimed mirror shield, stick (limited torch), )
-Some dialogue choices besides yes and no answers (can't say no to major friendly NPCs' requests and keep going though...)
-Cool escape sequence before the final boss
-Nice boss introductions - Metal Gear, Link's Awakening
Goemon's Great Adventure/Mystical Ninja 2 (N64, 1998) - 3D Action Adventure/2.5D Platformer Hybrid (hub maps with 1-2 branching paths in some areas, more SNES-style in structure, some ability gating), 2-Player Co-op (2nd player can join in during levels and town exploration but not in some houses), Hide 'n seek and On foot race mini-games
-Can unlock 4-player co-op (!) and alternative costumes (cosmetic only)
-4 playable chars - can switch at tea houses in towns here (goemon has a double jump, ebisumaru has a mid-air butt stomp/bounce attack (also used to jump higher), yae can swim as a mermaid and her charged up sub weapon shoots homing projectiles and can lock onto three enemies at once (doesn't work underwater but the regular shots are free here), sasuke has a hair attack which can be aimed upwards, each one has a slightly different sub weapon and a different special weapon/tool) and via teahouse teleporter pads in most levels (this is a room "in another dimension" meaning you can't access the town when doing this - only teleport back and forth to switch) - can no longer switch on the fly (sometimes annoying such as in 3-1 where it seems you can use either of two characters but then have to backtrack and pick Goemon)
-Day/night cycle (in levels you meet somewhat tougher enemies during night time and in town there are some night time only events, at one point you have to wait quite long to progress but it is optional)
-Can exit any level or town at their entrance and replay beaten levels - Spellcaster, Tails Adventure, MM1
-Some 2.5D elements (can't move on the z-plane in levels like in Tomba for example - only in towns and houses for some reason)
-Bizarre/silly humour (sit com, slap stick, Japanese)
-Rumble pak compatibility
-Temporary rides/mounts in some levels (horse - can't jump though, tank - can't move it while firing without a second player though, robot/mecha - can jump and attack but is a bit clumsy) - SMW
-Can run super fast in towns (hold B)
-Skippable cutscenes
-Giant robot battles return (the game shows combos when pausing during these) and are somewhat more advanced here (can't pull them towards you, can switch between two robots here to avoid certain attacks and use charge shots more often, the other robot is controlled by the AI while not used by the player but it's pretty useless)
-Some memorable locations (most castles, underworld area)
-Some interesting level gimmicks (the wave segment in the third castle, the large monster in the background of the fourth castle who partially destroys the bridge you're walking on and you'll later lure to beat the boss with)
-The game shows on the hub map if you've found all exits to a level or not (SMW)
-Can keep playing after beating the game and visit an additional town in area 4 (via the bus stop)
-Good bosses overall (final one has two forms)
-Voiced intro and ending
-You'll revisit previous levels with new enemies in them for some quests
-Shared HP and armor for all chars - TMNT?
-Can block some regular projectiles with your attacks but not others
Banjo-Kazooie (N64, 1998) - 3D Platformer/Platform Adventure (hub area, new moves and transformations letting you reach new areas, upgradeable health bar), Collectathon, Mini-games (collect/eat race, simon says, escort/protect mission of sorts, race, timed memory while harassed by an enemy, board game segment, etc.)
-Double/hover and super jump from the get go - SMB2/YI
-Optional tutorial at the beginning
-The music seamlessly changes a bit depending on where the player moves (changes its instrumentation when near level entrance jigsaw puzzles, underwater it becomes mellow and muffled with different instrumentation, fades as you fly higher in treasure trove cove, removes certain puzzle-related elements at one point in rusty bucket base)
-Animated portraits during dialogue (the animation is so-so though and some portraits look a bit rough due to color reduction) - Strider NES, Fray MSX
-Mini-bosses (but no main bosses besides the final one)
-Warp points/cauldrons (can only warp to found cauldrons and there's only a few of them though)
-Dropped HP items don't disappear (and eggs shat/shot backwards can be recollected)
-Various enemies talk to you without interrupting gameplay (most tutorial messages also don't interrupt gameplay) and so does the villain at various points
-Can exit unbeaten levels at their entrances - Spellcaster, Tails Adventure
-Some memorable characters (Gruntilda (the villain) - a witch who watches and comments on the player's actions over the course of the game without interrupting gameplay, Brentilda - the villain's relatively friendly but bitter sister)
-Some nice lighting effects, pretty expressive and well animated character models overall
-Some decent puzzles involving using transformations in the hub area
-Can cause environmental changes in some levels (MMX, Wario Land, etc.)
-Save and quit feature (can save anywhere, only one slot per game though and it doesn't save partial level progress in terms of notes and jinjos collected - changed in the XBLA ver.)
-Partially non-linear (have to enter the first couple of levels and collect the required moves in order to then enter the third one and onwards - oddly enough you can unlock the swamp level after the first level (mountain) but not get to its hub area segment before getting 180 notes so you have to play the second level (treasure trove cove) first)
-Ammo-based flight (also need to launch from certain pads)+invincibility
-Weird noises instead of voice samples during dialouge (generally not bad but can sometimes be annoying)
F-Zero X (N64, 1998) - 3D Hover Car Racing, Arcade-style, 4-Player Vs.
-Good sense of speed, 30 different hover cars/drivers to choose from, interesting boost/health dynamic, 30 cars simultaneously in a race (40 in Daytona USA ARC), some creative courses (jumps, pipelines, pipes which can be circled around like in Proun), drift (slows you down) and spin attacks, 30 courses, super excited announcer, options for boosting speed or acceleration while decreasing the other skill (boosting acceleration isn't nearly as useful though?), battle mode (single player only though), camera options, falling off the track costs a life (instead of just putting the player at a disadvantage like in Mario Kart), unlockable cup with randomly generated tracks (x cup), track editor in the 64DD version

Densha de Go! 64 (N64, 1999)
Top Gear Rally 2 (N64, 1999) - Racing Sim, 4-Player Split-screen; Random tracks mode (some customization: 4 types of terrain, 3 types of weather, three difficulty levels; this mode lacks the simulation aspects from the main game though)
Shadow Man (N64, 1999) - 3D Action Adventure/Platform Adventure (gain some abilities which let you progress as well as explore further into previously visited areas (mainly weapons and key type ones though besides the wristlets/poigne), using the l'eclipser item in the real world locations changes the enemies and what you can reach there, mostly interconnected world), Collectathon
-Can teleport between worlds and visited sub areas at any point (using a teddy bear which is a memorabilia of Mike's dead brother Luke)
-Lock-on aiming which allows for circle strafing if you're carrying the gun and aiming at a nearby enemy (Soul Reaver - released in the same month), Doesn't work that well against flying enemies
-Parallel world theme (kingdom of the dead kind of place called Deadside where the player char (Mike) turns into Shadow Man and if he dies in the real world he ends up there - similar to Soul Reaver or Zelda 3)
-Some sequence breaking possibilities (can reach some govis (contain dark souls which level up your ability to open coffin gates and other things) sooner than intended, in a couple of rooms you can ignore pressing a switch or skip the intended platforming segment with some smart platforming)
-Roll and quick turn moves (press crouch while running/back while rolling respectively (some delay after using the latter though)/pretty fast swimming underwater/can cling to ledges and climb up or jump backwards/can shimmy (Tomb Raider)
-Story/lore exposition via dark and poetic monologues by Mike when entering new areas (similar to Soul Reaver) and tomes with text and images (similar to System Shock 2 or Ultima 7 - these can help a bit in figuring out what to do next at times)
-Some decent humour (Jaunty the irish talking snake in Deadside), "I'm the lizard king!"
-Higher res option with a RAM expansion pack
-Can see how many dark souls are left to collect in each sub area as well as in the whole game via the pause menu
-Pretty good boss intros (similar to Metal Gear)
-Some shortcuts within sub areas (there could've been a few more though considering the lack of maps)
-Some decent platforming+spatial awareness (playrooms area)+timing puzzles
-Some interesting items/abilities (manual shield power up (blocks projectiles while draining voodoo ammo), calabash/explosive can be used to remove floor panels and against enemies - Aztec, Metroid; can hold and use two weapons at once (Phantom 2040?; two automatic weapons is fun, getting 120 dark souls lets you unlock a second copy of the best weapon so you can use two of them)
-The flambeau (basically a stronger version of the asson/skull staff) can also be used as a torch - useful in the undercity+mordant street+station areas (until you find the flashlight))
-Some nice effects (burning enemies), Very good draw distance overall (so-so underwater)
-Some memorable locations (street and station areas, playrooms, cageways)
-Some good bosses (Jack, Legion/final boss)
-Special game over cutscene for if you die to the final boss
-Partially non-linear structure (more than one coffin gate can be opened at various points in the game and there are some branching paths in some sub areas, can choose which bosses to face when besides the first one? - collect retractors and use on the gates to their areas, have to assemble the l'eclipser before you can explore the liveside locations properly - can only see a little bit of them before doing so)
-Save anywhere (7 slots) - loading takes you to the beginning of the area you saved in though
-Infinite lives (dying just puts you in Deadside if you were controlling Mike at the church or back at the beginning of the current area (or the one you just teleported to) if you already were in Deadside or in one of the boss areas as Mike, there are also some checkpoints within sub areas - when luke's ghost appears it means you've reached one)
-Your Shadow Man form has a few differences (can climb walls behind "blood waterfalls" using the Poigne (wristlets with claws attached), is immune to falling or drowning and can be made immune to fire, can channel voodoo items into weapons to power them up)
-The govis make a heartbeat sound when close to them but it's not used to find ones that you can't see (placing them right behind a breakable or false wall for example; Ecco Jr, Powerslave, later ued in Metroid Prime and Hollow Knight)

N64 Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M.
2000 WIP:
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64, 2000) - 3D Action Adventure, Mini-games (horse race, Goron race, alien abduction)
-More developed time travel concept (you're stuck in a three day loop until the end (similar to Groundhog Day); you can now skip ahead by 6 hours or slow time down by 2/3 using versions of the song of time - good but should've been more flexible considering the schedule for several sidequests; in the 3DS ver. the former lets you travel to a specific hour instead)
-Warp song (Song of Soaring; warp between activated owl statues (hit them with your sword, about one per area) and the dungeon entrance if you're in a dungeon, can't use it while indoors) - you'll get it pretty early too
-Four transformations via masks (Deku - hover jump (via certain flowers which can also be used as an upward attack as well as upward air streams in a few parts)+skip on water a few times (not used that much though)+spit attack, Goron - fast rolling ball (with longer jumps via certain ramps) and super bomb user+stomp move+can walk in lava, Zora - improved swimming+MP-based shield and has a ranged attack if you hold down the attack button+you can jump out of water when swimming quickly (kinda tricky to pull off though), Fierce Deity - basically just an easy mode for boss fights; the first three are all useful in the last main dungeon)
-Music and ambience gets more ominous towards the end of the time cycle
-More fleshed out world and characters
-Improved graphics and overall aesthetics
-Camera and monkeys (re-used from ALttP and LA but still)
-Some good puzzles (big goron outside the mountain/snowhead temple, ikana castle falling floor room, way to the stone tower temple entrance, some light reflection puzzles, upside down flip of the stone tower dungeon - kinda like the inverted castle in SotN except you also unlock chests that you open in the flipped version and vice versa),
-Environmental changes from beating the boss of each area (MMX?), A couple of other fairly major environmental changes (restore a dried up river - Zelda 3/Golvellius 2, the giant skeleton that breaks a bridge)
-More interesting mini-bosses overall
-A bit easier to aim in FP mode (still hard to get the best prices in the shooting mini-games)
-Some good bosses
-Some memorable characters (zora guitarist, mask salesman, darmani, skull kid, postman, )
-Less intrusive fairy companion (would've been nice to be able to ask it for clues in some cases though)
-Some other interesting masks (movement speed+jump length upgrade+see some hidden timers w/ the bunny hood, can make redeads dance with Garo's mask, the stone mask lets you become invisible to most NPCs and enemies))
-Two optional dungeons (three if counting the graveyard; swamp spider house, moon dungeons - 4 parts)
-Termina is an apocalyptic world vaguely made up of the villain's memories of Hyrule which makes for a darker overall atmosphere
-Some sequence breaking opportunities (backwards jump past the guards of deku palace, ice arrow skip at ikana canyon, faster climb towards stone tower temple, can get to some stray fairies earlier than intended in stone tower, more with bomb jump and other glitches)
-Clone statue song (can make up to 4 of them and have 3 of them stand on switches - similar to some puzzles in four swords but using weights on switches had been done since the 80s I believe (isometric puzzle games) as well as in Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu)
-The NPC schedules and (minor) interaction between races makes the world feel a bit more organic and alive
Paper Mario (N64, 2000) - RPG
Perfect Dark (N64, 2000) - FPS
-Additional objectives that change the general flow/route through levels in a big way on higher difficulties. At least one mission has a completely different point of entry on the highest difficulty: instead of providing sniper support for an NPC, you're placed in the shoes of the character you were meant to protect
Banjo-Tooie (N64, 2000) - 3D Platformer/Platform Adventure (MV; some leves connect to each other and not just the hub area, some returning to previous levels and hub areas+reaching new areas with gained abilities and transformations to complete them - can let you unlock more levels sooner for less linearity, train runs through each level as you open up its station in it, collecting progress is saved, etc), Collectathon, Mini-games including FPS segments, 4-player MP mode (mini-games only)
-Double/hover and high jump plus stomp+roll (no movement delay after it here and some of the other moves are a bit more flexible as well)+tackle/beak barge from the get go (super jump from certain yellow pads placed in some spots or from temporary spring shoes)
-Optional tutorial at the beginning
-Pretty good bosses overall (good introductions, more than one phase each, you're only required to fight the final one and the returning mini-boss)
-Teleporters (tunnel shortcuts and warp points) in the hub area and levels respectively - can only warp to found ones and there's only a few tunnel entrances in the hub area (there are however 2-5 warp points per level; would've been even better if you could gain a warp beacon to let you go back to a warp point from anywhere)
-Decent-good dialogue overall (sounds more of its time rather than old fashioned/fairy tale style though, some good humour (fourth wall breaking, meta, silly))
-Can exit unbeaten levels at their entrances or by saving and quitting - Strider NES?
-Some sequence breaking opportunities (can pick up some items sooner with the remote controlled bomb robots, can double jump as banjo by jump-canceling out of a mid-air attack (also a bit higher than his high jump), can skip paying the bartender to open up a room, don't need to use the generators in the generator cavern to get to the jiggy there - same with lights in the dark basement room to get that one, tricky kazooie jump to reach the outdoors flight pads in the industries lvl faster, mumbo skip in cloud cuckooland, more with glitches)
-Can cause environmental changes in some levels by doing something in the same level or another one (MMX, Wario Land, etc.)
-Some decent-good puzzles (strength bell in level 3, solo kazooie to jump higher with super jump pads, sick dino, atlantis door code, etc.)
-Dropped HP items don't disappear (and eggs shat/shot backwards can be recollected)
-Various enemies talk to you without interrupting gameplay (most tutorial messages also don't interrupt gameplay) - see the prequel however the villains don't frequently talk to you here
-Temporary speed boots let you run on water here - Similar to Sonic 3
-Some nice visual effects (lighting, Animated portraits during dialogue (the animation is so-so though), pretty expressive and well animated character models overall)
-Some unlockable "cheats"/optional abilities (find two mystery eggs and give to heggy+pages and give to Cheato the book+ice key and give to wumba in the hub area; homing eggs, dragon kazooie sidekick (spew fire when standing still (will also scare enemies)+unlimited fire eggs+move between all areas when solo, "kazooie smash" - use her as a club (meh), 2x feather (flight ammo) capacity - meh, 2x egg ammo capacity, no fall damage - should've been default, health regen - very OP since it's fast, jukebox - sound test)
-Clear audio cues from jinjos allow you to find them without seeing them (in the prequel they'd yell but you had to be very close to them already) - Ecco Jr., Powerslave
-Some new mechanics (can split Banjo and Kazooie up at split-up pads to control either of them alone - used for some puzzles and they can learn a few solo abilities)
-No lives system=you can use deaths to warp
-Run up marked walls with the claw clamber boots - Similar to Strider NES and SMW
-Some memorable characters (the witches, klungo)
-Save and quit feature (can save anywhere, one slot per game - three in total)
-Partially non-linear (linear at first - after unlocking level 1 you can unlock 2 more levels by collecting the available jiggies in it and then 2 more levels by collecting jiggies in the next one you enter, can do some objectives in any order inside levels, in hellfire peaks you can choose which boss to fight first and the latter one is a bit tougher), can't use the railroad tunnels without taking the train ("bad things will happen" - lame), sadly you can't choose to unlock a later level - have to unlock them in order, )
-Skippable intro and ending here however parts of other cutscenes are not
-Features domestic violence against kids (mom on child action)
-Stealth element (pretty rare and basic; sneaking in a couple of segments, destroying cameras to not get detected in another) - Metal Gear
Sin & Punishment (N64, 2000) - 3D Rail Shooter/Cabal-like/Run & Gun Hybrid, Humanoid Avatar-based, TP/Side view, 2-player asymmetric co-op
-Strafing, dodge rolling and double jumping from the get go - Wild Guns has the first two
-Lock on aiming (After Burner, Galaxy Force 2) however you can only lock onto one enemy at a time and you have to aim fairly close to them and the shots become weaker when you use it so you'll want to not use it as much as possible
-Twin stick (stick and c-buttons) movement and aiming controls - Gun Fight (2D), Alien Resurrection (3D, 2000)?
-Almost fully voice acted (minus the tutorial and ending, not the best acting though)
-Very good bosses overall (and lots of them, multiple phases and often multiple parts to shoot), 2+ mini-bosses per level
-Pretty nice tutorial (interactive, each explanation is skippable)
-Platforming and basic melee in a rail shooter - 3D World Runner/Dynamite Duke
-One rotating boss arena (Radiant Silvergun)
-Can reflect enemy shots back at them with the sword and it's required for some boss fights - Zelda 3
-Romance in a shooter
-Some large and detailed models
-Save feature´- you unlock a level select by beating the game

2002 WIP:
2003:
