Overall Score-6.5
+
Castlevania IV/Earthworm Jim style gameplay (whip swinging on hooks)
Good variety
Difficulty options
Decent assortment of weapons (gun, whip, grenades)
Hidden/off the beaten path items
Grab onto ledges from below (doesn't always work)
Good length
Decent ambient sounds
Alternate ending (hard mode)
Decent final boss
Decent variation (most city and cave levels are very similar though with unfocused and typically western level design)
Some interesting ideas (first Shanghai stage, cart ride stage, tank boss)
Captures the feel of the movies fairly well (map screen between stages, still images with dialogue from the movies)
+/-
Small delay when punching or whipping
Password save (short)
Invulnerability during roll move
Your bullets are deflected by enemy bullets
Weapons don't carry over to the next stage
Respawning enemies
Some enemies have knockback while others don't
You can move while shooting but not while whipping
Auto-fire on whipping and shooting but not punching
Lifeboat segment (rail shooter style) is pretty choppy
Inconsistent targeting (7-way when holding a gun, 5-way with a whip)
Easy to rack up lives
Invincibility during swinging move
-
Uneven difficulty curve (second stage, fourth stage; easy fourth stage boss, easy fifth stage boss (one hit?))
Trial & error (first stage of the third episode, rope bridge boss, fist fight on wagon in stage 6, very hard to see some level hazards, boulder chase level)
Some control issues (clunky "roll" move (set length, need to jump backwards or roll again to cancel it, hitting enemies with it make you bounce and face the opposite direction), can't cancel a whip swing by moving forwards (you can do it by moving backwards), when bouncing on shop roofs you can't punch if you whipped first (the attack is locked to the weapon you first used when starting to bounce, delay when crouching (and the animation needs to finish before you can move again))
Boxes disappear if you walk too far away from them
Leaps of faith (can't look up/down)
The 'dark' level in the temple has torches all over it
Disappointing ending cutscenes to each episode (still and grainy images from the movies)
Boring airplane stage (slow and primitive)
Hard to get a good flow going due to the large number of enemies and their high HP
Repeats music tracks a lot
Missing some important scenes and lacking the puzzles elements from the movies
