Nintendo GameCube Games That Were Innovative and/or Ahead of Their Time
2001 WIP:
Pikmin (GC, 2001) - RTS
Animal Crossing (N64 DD, /GC, 2001) - Virtual Life Sim
-Date-based content
Luigi's Mansion (GC, 2001) - TP Action Adventure or Maze Action?/Hunting or Trapping
Super Monkey Ball/Monkey Ball (ARC/GC, 2001) - 3D Platformer, Ball Avatar-based, 2-4 Player Competition/Race and GP modes plus mini-games
-Good physics (ball labyrinth variation in 3D)
-Some creative level design (moving goalposts, shortcuts in many levels, rotating/tilting platforms, folding platforms (like a cardboard box), water ripple-like surfaces, etc.)
-Zoomable mini-map
-Jumping via ramps (Marble Madness) and platform edges
-Practice mode (for beaten levels only)
-Party (race, fight, target - ramp jump then hang gliding to a platform) and mini-game (billiards, bowling, golf) modes
-Interactive staff roll (unskippable though) - Altered Beast
-Replay feature (only shows the last few seconds of your playthrough of a level though - unless saved?, skippable)
-Unlock extra levels by finishing a difficulty mode without dying
-Calibration and rumble options
-Time attack mode
-Some trippy backgrounds
-Partially improved graphics compared to the arcade ver.
-Pretty good variation
Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC, 2001) - Arena Fighting
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle(GC, 2001) - 3D Platformer/Platform Adventure
Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II (GC, 2001) - Space Combat Sim/Flight Combat Sim
SSX Tricky (GC, 2001) - Sports (Snowboarding)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (GC/PS2/PS1, 2001) - Sports (Skating Tricks)
Crazy Taxi (ARC, 1999/DC, 2000/GC, 2001) - Racing/Taxi Sim, Arcade-style
Wave Race: Blue Storm (GC, 2001)
NHL Hitz 20-02 (GC, 2001) - Sports
FIFA Soccer 2002 (GC, 2001)
The Simpsons: Road Rage (GC, 2001)
XGIII: Extreme G Racing (GC, 2001)
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 (GC, 2001)
Disney's Tarzan Untamed (GC, 2001)
Batman: Vengeance (GC, 2001)
Madden NFL 2002 (GC, 2001)
2002 WIP:
Metroid Prime (GC, 2002) - FP Metroidvania/Platform Adventure (Magmoor Caverns is a partial hub as it connects to 4 other areas), FPS, Minor stealth aspect in the phazon mines where you can use the ball to move past some turrets and disable them instead of destroying them (however you can't not trigger them), FP View/TP View Hybrid (TP in ball mode, can't move normally in TP View though, camera is also pretty close to Samus in ball form which has a big effect on exploration and some combat since you can't really see behind her except for the mini-map - there are a few 2.5D segments where the camera becomes side view while in ball form though which is a good throwback to previous games)
-Lock-on aiming w/ circle strafing (much like Z-Targeting in Zelda the camera will focus on the enemy) and regular strafing (hold L without locking onto anything and then l/r with the left stick - for some reason this didn't work for me in Dolphin)
-Scanning mechanic (the game highlights points of interest while it's active and the "crosshair" which makes up about 20% of the screen is covering them (crucial ones (well most of them are crucial) are colored red) - later used in Deus Ex: HR, lets you find and read snippets of lore on various things at your own pace - similar to System Shock, gives some insight into what the pirates are thinking and doing which is cool, everything scanned is stored in a log book, can scan certain points to disable defensive turrets - similar to hacking in System Shock)
-Rotatable and zoomable 3D map on the map screen (The Divide, Star Wars: Dark Forces 2)
-Nice lighting and environmental effects (water vapor/water and face reflection on the visor), Good art direction overall (slick menus and HUD, some nice enemy and environment designs), Pretty satisfying sfx and overall ambience design
-Enemy radar - Cyborg Hunter
-Your visor displays a warning meter for environmental hazards like heat
-Named rooms on the map screen - Citadel?
-Optional hint system (text tutorial messages here and there (doesn't pause gameplay but is a bit too obvious at times), sub objective markers on the map - these show the goal room but not the route to it)
-Various sequence breaking possibilities (bomb jump over the arboretum runic gate - unintended and fixed in later versions, advanced dashing/side jumping for early space jump and faster boost ball (have to let go of the buttons in a specific order to go further, unintended and was mostly fixed in later versions of the game), early power bomb at phendrana's edge with tricky jumping (can go here after getting the ice beam), early nature artifact (magmoor) if you jump at the platform it's on from the right direction, can get a missile ammo upgrade in the grove room by jumping into the big tree's branches and around the tree, etc.; more with glitches)
-Nice ball movement/physics
-Some new moves and tools/weapons (boost ball - lets you roll faster and is used in some halfpipe segments, dash/side jump while locking onto something, space jump/double jump replaces high jump; wave beam=electric (stuns some enemies and activates some devices) and doesn't go through walls here+homing, thermal visor (infrared vision, spot shadow pirates and power conduits you can energize with a charge beam+ one boss's weak spot, harder to see enemies that don't emit heat and it can be overloaded by phazon or explosions), charge combos (charge beam+missile=super missile, ice beam=ice spread missile, etc.; only the super missile is required and all others are for combat use), phazon suit (protects against the blue phazon element/mutagen+half damage) and beam (hurt the metroid prime), )
-Some neutral creatures (stone toad, glider) - Metroid 2, Super Metroid
-Some good puzzles (magnet rail tower in the phazon mines, timing puzzles with bomb locks, some parts are designed for a double bomb jump) and platforming puzzles using the ball form
-Some good bosses (incinerator drone, thardus/rock giant - a bit drawn out though, omega pirate, ridley until his last phase, metroid prime - a bit drawn out as well; they're more like Zelda bosses in that they tend to make you use your newly gained abilities and have a minor puzzle aspect to them, most have several phases, set pieces during the last two which are destructible by the the bosses)
-Some new enemies are added to previous areas when you backtrack through them (not really enough though) and some new music as well
-Some technical options (Dolby surround, rumble, reverse Y-axis, visor and helmet opacity)
-Environmental gameplay effects (water draining and purifying, collapsing towers, rooms suddenly becoming dark requiring the thermal visor, raise the roof of a cave at one point, etc) - Metroid 2, MMX
-Enemy drop magnet via the charge beam (SM, Sonic 3)
-Three endings ("bad"=less than 75% completion, good=75% or more, "best"=100%)
-Can release some metroids on the space pirates at one point
-Frequent save points which also heal you
-Similar to Wonder Boy 3 and SotN you start out with various abilities that are lost as you escape)
-X-ray vision lets you see invisible enemies here but is also monochrome and lowers visibility range - similar to Zelda 2
-The scanner is a bit too helpful at times though this info is optional ("you can't reach this platform from this room", the game uses rain drops to hint at invisible platforms though there's also a scan point on it so it's kinda spoiled as a puzzle, )
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GC, 2002) - Action Adventure, Can jump manually but only while in the boat, Some new mini-games (the Battleship board game isn't great but the golf mini-game in the southwest is pretty fun)
-Nice art style using celshading
-Some interesting and funny characters (very expressive models for the time)
-Warp song (lets you fast travel to certain spots on the map)
-Counter attack move (only works against some enemies?)
-Bomb chucking
-Can control certain animals by using bait (seagulls - scout areas and press certain switches, pigs - dig for treasure by luring them to certain spots)
-Pick up and use some enemy weapons - Soul Reaver?
-Slightly more advanced music element (choose the beat (3/4, 4/4, 6/4) manually - how you do it is not explained in the tutorial though)
-Large overworld to explore
-Some new items (telescope, pictograph/camera)
-Great animation overall, nice weather and lighting effects
-Interesting setting (sail between islands in a flooded world - Waterworld inspired?)
-Not the same old story (but still fairly cliché)
-Helpers aren't as annoying as in the N64 games
-Surround sound
-Mini-map feature (two levels of zoom) - Hero of the Golden Talisman
-Day/night cycle with some changes to gameplay (Simon's Quest?; however you can't simply wait whenever you're on an island - you need to use a certain song to make time pass)
-Sometimes comical tone (the battleship game, )
-Dynamic music change when encountering enemies (PSO?)
-Treasure hunting (similar to Pirates!)
-Multi-targeting with the boomerang (similar to Panzer Dragoon except here you use one projectile to hit several targets one after another in one throw)
Some good puzzles (last part of the final dungeon, use the wind to travel by giant flower in the third dungeon (similar to Monster World 4) and to move some objects, Jabun's cave entrance, sunken castle cellar entrance (triangle blocks), earth temple light beam puzzles)
-3 warp points per dungeon which you can move between as you find them
-Good bosses overall (most of them are too easy though)
-Hyrulian language (beat the game to have it translated?)
-Some interesting enemies (statues which you need to shoot in the eye and then throw a bomb into via their mouth and which then spin towards you before dying, the dark blobs which you have to petrify with light and then smash/use as weights)
-Some memorable locations
-Zelda and some other NPCs are more active in helping the hero on his quest
-Mail box system (NPCs send you items and info as you progress through the game or finish side quests)
-Sometimes adds new enemies when backtracking to make those moments more interesting (Circle of the Moon?)
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GC, 2002) - Action Adventure/Surival Horror, TP View
-Sanity Meter - "As you encounter more enemies it will deplete, and the game slowly starts to mess with you. It can start out subtle, like seeing a book fly from one shelf to another, or hearing a ringing phone in another room only to go in there and see no phone at all. When it gets really low, it can even break the 4th wall. For example when going into a room full of zombies, then seeing the "Gamecube controller has been disconnected - please reconnect" message. Nothing worked, and soon I saw the game over screen...only to be dumped right outside the room I was just in. It was just the game messing with me because I had low sanity."
-Progresses across a 2000 years timeline - Civilization, EVO, Mega lo Mania, Age of Empires
Resident Evil (Remake) (GC, 2002/) - Action Adventure/Survival Horror
TimeSplitters 2 (GC/PS2, 2002) - FPS

Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights (GC, 2002) - Platform Adventure/Metroidvania (mostly linear structure - can enter mystic manor almost from the get go+go to skull cliff or creepy crwalies after getting stomp), Collectathon (several item gates; have to collect 3 keys in some rooms to progress), Basic stealth at some points (gained slippers for sneaking and lampshade for hiding), TP view, Mostly 2.5D gameplay (similar to Klonoa)
-Date/time-based content (based on the internal clock of the system): Fireworks in the sky for America's Independence Day and snowfall on Christmas.
-Some interesting movement abilities and tools for exploration and progression (helmet - charge through things and into enemies+break boxes and press certain buttons (similar to Sonic or Zelda 3+LA), umbrella - glide jump (Pac-Land, Wonder Boy in Monster Land)+climb upwards winds, smash/stomp - pound enemies and press certain buttons+break through weak floors (Hammerin' Harry, Yoshi's Island), shovel - dig up items at certain spots (Zelda 3), soap bubble - encases enemies and lets you use them as temporary platforms (Bubble Bobble/Metroid; bubble gum is used in a similar manner); gum shoes/galoshes and boots - walk across sticky surfaces/up steep slopes (Ys II?))
-Various warps/teleporters (several per area/level - accessed via the hub area outside the manor from the get go as well as found warp gates in later areas)
-Puzzle boss fights - Zelda series
-Upwards winds - Super Turrican
-Mostly skippable and mostly voiced dialogue
-Named rooms/sub areas on the map - Jet Set Willy, Run For It
-You'll sometimes meet Shaggy who helps you progress after being rescued (at one point he'll toss you upwards and can be controlled - you also make him press down a switch for you in the same room, some of these ideas feel underdeveloped however)
-One large scale environmental change (lower the water level in on sub area) and some smaller ones (bringing down the giant icicles/stalactites to use as platforms)
-Can keep playing after the ending - Toejam & Earl
-Respawn at the beginning of the current sub area if you die with no collection progress lost
-Some pits and instant death hazards however the game is pretty forgiving in that you just lose additional HP picked up and restart at the beginning of current room - Zelda 3
-Gallery room (unlocked monsters, cutscenes and pics)
-Captures the vibe of the cartoon series pretty well (for better or worse, uses laugh tracks and the jokes are mostly bad)

2003 WIP:
Tales of Symphonia (GC, 2003) - ARPG
Gotcha Force (GC, 2003) - TPS
F-Zero GX (GC, 2003) - Hover Car Racing/Futuristic Racing
Beyond Good & Evil (PS2/PC/XB/GC, 2003) - Action Adventure/Stealth (mostly linear Zelda-like, shops in the hub area and dungeon/hostile areas (can't sell items though); can fight your way through some stealth segments but it's harder, can stun guards by hitting a weak spot on their backs but not silent takedowns - if there's another guard they'll be notified and go restore the stunned guard), Some mini-games and optional challenges, Collectathon element (pearls to buy vehicle upgrades needed to progress)
-Gonzo journalism theme
-Interesting setting and premise (rebel group vs an oppressive military organization propagandizing its citizens and an alien threat infecting people, play as a broke photographer)
-Some interesting tools/abilities for progression (hovercraft jump upgrade, flight and space flight via the ship; disc launcher lets you press some switches and move some objects from afar; the partner tools are used like keys during exploration)
-Some interesting mechanics (take photos of points of interest or different species and send to a science lab to make money (similar to Spider-Man (MD) and scanning in Metroid Prime)+for proof against the corrupt alpha sections), aimed knocking of stunned enemies and bombs into objects to progress/reach optional items/extract smaller crystals (money) from large crystals while the game pauses for a few seconds - similar to Bash from Ori 1 and aimed throwing in Guacamelee, can subscribe to newsletters from the Iris network and Domz army to get both sides of the conflict, CPU ally moves - the pig can stomp to stun enemies, use food to lure out an animal at one point - an underused mechanic though)
-In medias res beginning
-Basic dialogue trees and you can offer items to your CPU allies (can actually offer health bar upgrades to them though it's generally better to keep them for yourself) - can also ask almost anyone about plot relevant subjects and get a variety of responses which generally feel believable which adds to the immersion - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
-Good VA overall (partial)
-Can change directions during an attack combo - Streets of Rage?
-Pretty good map system (2D TD view map of layouts, shows all floors in the current area and what you've explored as well as items that you've bought a detector for (pearls, animals - can get these after the first dungeon)+some points of interest on the current floor, zoomable though there's only two levels of zoom, quest objective markers)
-Item drop magnet (so-so reach when on foot though) - Sonic 3
-Some voiced assistance during action segments that also don't pause the action (can't review these if you miss them though; Half-Life?)
-Can run and roll from the get go (Mario 64?) as well as backflip during combat. Can also perform a 6-hit combo with the right timing from the get go (hit twice, pause, then hit 4 times), The roll move becomes a sidestep dodge during combat
-Good animation and certain visual effects (water effect, day/night cycle - no gameplay effect though)
-Some good vocal tracks (latin, reggae, ska punk/rock)
-Some good puzzles (electrical puzzles in dungeon 2, spatial reasoning in the slaughterhouse, some timing puzzles, code to room 2 in the bar) and some decent (light reflection puzzles, some block puzzles, some stealth, knocking enemies into electronic barriers to remove them - generally no limit to how many times you can do it so pretty easy)
-Fight and explore alongside a CPU ally (Secret of Mana/Evermore and Silver though you can't switch to the allies here), Fight alongside CPU ships during the finale (this part is too short though)
-Neutralizer cannon lets you lock on to 3 enemies or boxes (Galaxy Force 2)
-Some scripted events during exploration (Pey'j getting caught, surprise chase scenes in the city, alien attacks and attack on your home) - Superman 2600
-NPC conversations and behavior in the city evolves over the course of the game
-Good dialogue overall
-Some memorable chars (HH, Pey'j, Jade)
-Some shortcuts
-Can ask your current CPU ally for tips at times
-Some decent bosses (second main boss, reaper, final boss)
-Frequent checkpoints (regain half your health when dying)
-Non-white female protagonist who's also not really sexualized
-Get fined for attacking civilian or military vehicles at sea (there's also friendly fire if you hit Pey'j during combat though it doesn't seem to do any damage)
-More than one entry point to one sub area (the city which is like a hub inside the hub which is the overworld)
-Partial bestiary (alpha sections units)

2004 WIP:
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GC, 2004) - RPG
Pikmin 2 (GC, 2004) - RTS
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GC, 2004) - 3D Platform Adventure/Metroidvania/Zelda-like AA (mostly linear - can do part of the underwater sub area of torvus in either order, keys can sometimes be found in any order; Temple sanctuary is a minor hub connecting to three parts of the temple grounds area which in itself is a hub for the other areas), FP view, 4-player MP mode (death match and bounty modes (find and steal coins), 6 arenas), Collectathon element (3 keys per dark world sub area, 9 keys to get to the sky temple)
-Some new moves (screw attack is back and lets you jump forward 7 times in a row+wall jump in side view at certain points with two adjacent walls with a special surface (couldn't do it in Prime 1), gravity boost=gravity suit+rise to surface while underwater (works like a temporary jetpack underwater though it's not used that much), boost ball+spider ball can be used to jump in ball form from certain magnetic rail surfaces (spring ball), ) and tools/weapons (dark beam - opens portals to dark world+opens dark doors+"freezes" groups of enemies if charged (no ice beam here)+activates certain crystal gates/switches, light beam - opens portals to light world+opens light doors+more damage vs dark world enemies+multiple homing beams when charged+energize beacons to damage dark world enemies+activate certain crystal gates/switches, upgraded dark and light beam shots=similar to BFG in Doom, seeker launcher=shoot 5 missiles simultaneously (opens multi-lock doors), annihilator beam=light+dark energy (opens portals) and auto-homing+stun enemies with charged beam and draw enemies into powered up beacon lights)
-Some interesting new level gimmicks (safe zones in the dark world - shoot beacons to create temporary ones in preplaced spots) - creates a good sense of vulnerability, ) and enemies (quad/spider robot - two phases, rezbit - can't be locked onto while not using its frontal shield and has an attack that forces a button combo "system reboot" of Samus's suit to be able to move again, infant tallon metroids can quickly become adult by touching phazon)
-Parallel worlds theme (Zelda 3; some switches open up paths in the other or both worlds though this is a bit underused and you never gain the ability to travel between them where you want to, different enemies in each world and partially different layouts)
-Optional hint system (text tutorial messages here and there (doesn't pause gameplay but is a bit too obvious at times), sub objective markers on the map - these show the goal room to get the next ability but not the route to it)
-Some good bosses
-Some scripted non-cutscene scenes which add to immersion (seeing the pirates interacting with objects and metroids carrying newly consumed ones later on, fight between pirates and dark samus, etc.) - Superman A2600
-Adds a teleportation ability via the light suit though you get it very late. Can teleport to restored temples (one per area in these areas - Agon, Torvus, Sanctuary, Great Temple). Some shortcuts
-Some neutral creatures that help you in a way (lightbringers - moving safe zone beacons in the dark world, herd of small drones which can be killed for item drops in the fortress area, flying maintenance bots in the fortress, watchdrone) - SM
-Various new enemies are added to previous areas when you backtrack through them (generally not ones you've never seen before though) - CV: CotM
-Some sequence breaking opportunities but no major ones (bypass getting the keys to the Hive Temple with bomb jump+screw attack, enter torvus before dark suit with slope jump/ghetto jump, more minor skips with scan dashing/side hopping while locked on+slope jumping+standing on unintended surfaces in the environment; more and more major ones using glitches)
-Environmental gameplay effects (various mechanisms being activated or deactivated, some manipulation of larger objects via switches or breaking walls, dark samus taking out a bridge at one point, sand mound drainage in one room, water draining (gathering hall)) - somewhat fewer large scale ones than in the prequel (no collapsing towers/rooms suddenly becoming dark/roof raising)
-Some good puzzles (seeker launcher circular tiles sliding puzzle, some platforming/disappearing block puzzles in ball form, ) and some decent ones (staircase blocks in pirate base, sacred bridge gate, some spatial reasoning ones, some ball form platforming, some timing puzzles such as in transit tunnel east, echo note puzzles (basic musical note sequence puzzles))
-Color coded scannable objects (makes it easy to tell what is important for progression to scan)
-Can perform a roll jump similar to Metroid 2 or DKC (while holding R in ball form, unmorph+jump at the right time as you fall off a ledge+hold L right after unmorphing to keep your speed) however it's tricky to pull off consistently. Can also perform a double jump after a bomb jump by doing it with your back against a wall, going forward a bit then pressing back while doing it - tricky
-Some memorable locations (fortress, ship wreck area, parts of the dark world)
-Three endings ("bad"=less than 75% completion, good=75% or more, "best"=100% (not really the best since it shows dark samus surviving))
-Story has more of a System Shock/RE influence with logs detailing how human crew turn into a form of zombies
-Slow regeneration while in safe zones in the dark world - a bit too slow; Ys
-Some pits however you lose only a bit of health from falling into one and get respawned on the last platform you stood on
-Some controllable turrets however the aiming is really slow
-Enemies don't keep dropping items which you already have a full stock of here however some enemies don't drop light and dark beam ammo at all

2005 WIP:
Resident Evil 4 (GC/PS2, 2005/PC, 2007) - 3D Action Adventure/Survival Horro, TP View
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (GC, 2005) - TBS/SRPG
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect (GC/PS2/XB, 2005) - FPS
Chibi-Robo! (GC, 2005) - Platform Adventure/ARPG (leveling by performing positive actions and finishing quests which yields happy points - trade these in at your "home base" to gain life bar upgrades and tools/abilities, can buy other items (tools (ladder and bridge items, weapons, etc), upgradeable weapon, a few hidden paths, minor puzzle element), Semi-Open World, Betting mini-game (2x money if you win, 10% of bet back as happy points if you lose), Collecthathon (happy points and money are often gained by walking around and picking stuff up and you need these to progress, reactivating Giga Robo costs 10k, etc.; optional: 6 colored blocks, 20 frog rings for jenny, stickers), One short 2.5D segment with a stealth element in the kitchen sink drain, Some mini-games
-Unusual premise (a family with some relationship problems buys a small companion robot for their daughter who the player controls, goal is to make/keep the family members happy as you learn more about their lives and explore their house) and setting (a single suburban house and backyard that you explore as a small robot)
-Warp points, Trauma suit can be used to warp back to your base/house)
-Nice overall animation
-Some good humour (silly and over the top - anime-style, superhero and guru parodies, the war between the toy soldiers and the family dog)
-Unusual bittersweet and sometimes mysterious tone (family's personal issues, the music, flashback story bits, how giga-robo is introduced is quite well done; almost everything ends on a happy or sentimental note though)
-NPCs with schedules that change a bit as you progress the story - Brave Fencer Musashi, Shenmue
-Can see your avatar when it's behind objects
-A few tools and suits used for exploration and traversal (ladders and bridges, the blaster at a few points to remove obstacles or hit switches, spoon - dig holes in soft dirt (for planting seeds) or dig up buried objects, radar - pinpoint the location of something hidden such as doors, frog suit - talk to any frog+the Bluebird and Jenny, alien ear chip - understand alien speech; can only equip one tool and costume at a time)
-Decent level of world interaction (feeding the fish and other animals, getting reactions from posing in front of NPCs, etc.)
-Some shortcuts (not quite enough of them though)
-Some minor layout differences between day- and nighttime
-Some memorable characters and locations (Sophie, Mort, Sunshine, Jenny, the parody chars / the castle model, the past (uses time travel for another flashback scene of sorts with a basic puzzle via a found UFO in the backyard; similar to Day of the Tentacle))
-The conclusion of the free rangers side quest
-Good cutscenes overall (some are overly drawn out)
-In-game epilogue (not much to it though and the spydorz are still around) - Dragon Quest, Toejam & Earl
-Partially open-ended structure (some key/quest item gating in that you can't go into the foyer before learning to pose or into the kitchen before posing in front of sophie for example - can get the chibi-blaster and go outside before doing this; the living room is a hub for the first floor while the foyer is a hub for the second though some other rooms also connect to more than one room, have to get the giga-battery before you can get the living room ladder?, can't buy the kitchen or foyer ladders before the living room one, can only buy a 1-2 different traversal tools at a time in the shop)
-Pretty frequent save points placed at outlets in the house which also serve as battery recharge points (3 slots, shows collecting and leveling progress as well as time taken), Can get auto-revived with a bit of health if you buy the chibi-battery (about an hour into the game; Zelda 3) - one use item only though which is annoying considering its price+you can only buy one at a time
Side quest focus (mostly fetch quests, some mini-games including two races that you buy vehicles for - can't use them outside of these)
-Partially inspired by Toy Story (talking toys - who also hide that they're alive from the human family - and the suburban house setting)
-Unlimited lives however you lose some money from dying and you always restart back at your base
-In-game manual however it can only be accessed in the living room at night
-The game plays a short ditty when moving around (similar to Dig Dug or Dragon Slayer 1) which changes instruments depending on the surface as well as tempo depending on your speed - doesn't sync to the background music though. Picking up the cord makes you move a little bit faster
-Semi-silent protagonist (can only say yes/no and use poses with different suits to get a reaction out of NPCs), Can't make your helper ask other toys to carry you or help you in a fight
-Random enemy encounters which you can escape from
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (GC/PS2/XB, 2005) - Semi-Open World Action Adventure/Beat 'em up (hub map w/ partially non-linear structure, access a moves shop in churches, bought lifebar+critical mass power+some attack move upgrades, some hidden items (comic books (see below) and money), find some additional lore via the Blonsky files - Bruce/Hulk and his buddy Samson also comment on these when they're accessed at the church), Platformer, Various mini-game style side missions/challenges, TP view, Optional collectathon element (find comic book covers (60 in total) to unlock codes, movies and art)
-Various fun/interesting moves (default: aimed throws which can be combined with the lock-on feature (can throw cars at helicopters), can pick up and throw many different objects and enemies as well, high charge jumps (see Spider-Man 2 or SMB2) and charged throws. Can also charge another jump while in mid-air to jump again immediately after landing. Can also do a charge throw after a charge jump, can run and jump up walls (similar to Spider-Man 2) as well as keep going upwards while jumping off and onto one or transition from running to climbing and back, steel fist ability - can break some objects in two after picking them up and use each part like a brass knuckle, air strike=mid-air dash+punch, can perform grapple combos (attack grabbed enemies); bought: pick something up while running with the running grab move - need to also buy double fist toss to throw while running though, dashing straight - dash attack while running, sonic clap - aoe desperation move which can also be upgraded, air stomp, throw while running, shield weaponization - turn a large vehicle wreckage into a shield which blocks attacks from any direction as you walk or attack (front only if you run)+can be thrown like a boomerang if you buy an upgrade, additional air dash which can also be upgraded three times for a total of two longer and faster dashes, double air dash (late-game), tornado frenzy - air combo, rising upper - uppercut enemy into the air, missile punchback (deflect projectiles with a well-timed punch+aimed deflection at an enemy) and missile catch, shield grind - ride a wreck turned into a shield like a skateboard over uneven surfaces (used for some challenges), critical atomic smash and sonic clap - smart bomb-style attacks with some charge time, spinning tank throw, target kick - kick a grabbed aircraft into another one, etc.)
-Fun exaggerated physics when throwing or running into things and when running/jumping up walls
-Lock-on aiming allowing circle strafing around targets. Can quickly switch between targets to lock onto with the c-stick
-Partially destructible environments (vehicles, some smaller buildings and a few larger ones during story missions, rock formations, weak walls during some indoors boss fights) - gain money/smash points from destroying things which can be used to buy new moves in a shop; Rampage, Aztec
-Can perform four hit combos if you combine special attacks with regular punches in a certain way (1 special followed by 3 regular punches). Can charge any attack during a combo and keep it going (some enemies are armored and require charged attacks to harm). Can also buy a 6-hit punch combo from chapter 2 onwards and a 5-hit shockwave one in chapter 4 (which can be upgraded for more damage+a spread to it), plus you can combine a dashing uppercut with a 4-hit air combo from around chapter 3 onwards.
-Teleporters (jump markers) - can exit a hub area at any point via these. There are also several teleporters you can find per hub area which can be used as shortcuts and reward you with money for finding them
-Mini-map with objective markers (shows the direction of the objective - GTA?)
-"Critical mass" mode (similar to intenso mode in guacamelee) - energy is built up from the point that you gain 100% HP via health from defeated enemies/destroying some objects/placed health items and while the mode is active you do more damage with each attack and can use special critical mass attacks. Using critical moves and getting hurt lowers the meter and eventually takes you out of it
-Some cool weapons (homing missile launcher from chapter 5 onwards, ball and chain (from large crane trucks so pretty situational) - used like a yo-yo and pull enemies and vehicles towards you or throw it)
-Pretty nice explosion and object breaking visual effects (some fall apart in a kind of comical way not tied to where you are hitting them though)
-Tracks various stats like number of deaths and jumps
-Sometimes comical tone (various NPC comments during missions)
-Subtitles toggle (doesn't add it for some NPC comments during minor cutscenes though and the mission briefing texts are completely different to the spoken ones)
-Regenerating health but only up to half the health bar and it's a bit slow - Ys
-ERS meter/threat level meter (similar to GTA) - eventually a strike team is sent after Hulk if you destroy enough things and you get extra smash points/money for taking them out (also resets the meter)
-Can quickly access any finished side missions from the story mode menu
-Air recovery move (recover from knockback-causing attacks similar to when thrown in Streets of Rage) - have to buy it
-People run away in fear and driven cars tend to veer to the side and into walls when you get close - nice touch
-Can use a certain balloon in the first city as a hang glider
-Get some tips on how to beat a mission if you fail at it
-Enemies can accidentally damage and kill each other with their shots
-Skippable cutscenes
-Some good bosses (hulkbuster prototype - calls on reinforcements if you don't take out the satellites, can use the environment vs the first and second bosses, devil hulk besides it being near impossible to break free when he tries to chew you)
-Good animation in-game
-Can skip getting trapped at one point in the late game (no other skips?)
-New game+ (restart with all moves you bought)
-Some unlockables (play as abomination and savage banner, hard mode)
-Save anywhere while in a hub area (5 slots, can't save during a mission or boss fight, shows the current mission only), Can abort and retry missions and boss fights at any point
-Partially non-linear structure (side missions/challenges are optional and can be done in any order (have access to 12 of them after the tutorial and two intro missions), story missions are done one at a time in a set order, new shop moves are unlocked with each finished chapter which is 2-5 story missions long)
-Hilarious "inner voice" cutscenes during some missions - not sure if intentional
-No damage or other penalty from falling into water - Hulk just jumps back out of it
-No dodge moves but can use larger vehicles' wreckages as shields and deflect projectiles after buying these moves (chapter 2) -protects even from behind
-Adrenaline Surge mode - do more damage+gain access to critical mass moves while very low on health (more of a help if you're doing poorly than a risk/reward thing)

2006 WIP:
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GB, 2006) - 3D Action Adventure, TP view (FP View aiming), Fishing mini-game, Sumo wrestling mini-game, Snowboarding segment w/ manual jumping (can replay it as a racing mini-game later on), Rapids/waterfalls canoeing segment
-Transform into a wolf (Okami/SotN (also similar to Zelda 3 except it's actually useful here); dig (pass some wolf-only paths and find a few optional caves within stone circles), listen to NPCs' thoughts via their spirits, sing poorly (singing/music playing is somewhat more advanced yet again in that you have to control the pitch and note length (no need to switch between time signatures here though unlike in WW), talk to animals and explore the twilight-covered parts of Hyrule (similar to the dark world in Zelda 3), perform more difficult jumps in certain spots, area of effect attack which is similar to a spin attack but covers a larger area, can sense and listen to the spirits of NPCs stuck in the twilight - they can't see you back (can also sense and fight Poes/evil spirits), can learn scents to see trails leading to certain NPCs while in sense mode, can't climb ladders nor talk to people (they're usually scared of you as well))
-The horse Epona is back (can name her now as well as use a variety of weapons while riding her - the boomerang and slingshot aren't that effective though since you need to get fairly close to lock onto enemies, can ride her in towns, can run over smaller enemies, she'll stay where you left her even if moving to another area and back, can summon her in certain areas using special grass and the game automatically plays her song when interacting with it - later on you get an item to summon her with in more places, she is also used in a couple of boss fights here and wolf Link can speak to her)
-Can warp out of dungeons as well as back to the last room you were in using a bird that you can carry with you (have to find it in each dungeon, can't warp back to finished dungeons from the outside with it though)
-Some good puzzles (moving platforms affected by your weight puzzle in the sky temple, weight room and small statue puzzle (heart piece) in temple of time, reekfish puzzle (the smell cloud around it after fishing one up is just enough of a clue), the second snow temple block puzzle (and the second block puzzle in the northern cave blocked by a magical ice barrier) and the cannon puzzle which spans most of the dungeon, main water levels puzzle and big key in the water dungeon (can also do a couple of rooms in reverse order here), some of the magnetic puzzles in the second dungeon (also a nice blend of fire and water themes), desert dungeon poe hunt, sacred grove statues (surprisingly hard for an obligatory one though), )
-Fairly frequent warp spots
-New combat moves (ending blow/finishing blow - kill enemies that are knocked out to prevent them from countering, shield bash - stun enemies in melee and block projectiles manually (the latter isn't really needed though?), back slice - like the counter attack in WW except not a counter here and a bit harder to pull off, helm splitter - somersault attack following a shield bash that lets you attack again from behind (very good), mortal draw - quickly draw your sword and knock out the enemy by waiting until it's close and not targeting it (very strong but not always practical), jump strike - spin attack+jump attack (good), great spin attack - stronger and larger version at full health (never used it))
-Link auto-switches targets quickly mid-sword combo if one enemy dies
-Some new items (double clawshot/hookshot - pull yourself towards other clawshot markers while holding onto one, dominion rod - awaken and control certain statues (they mirror your movement and the large one in the temple of time can destroy certain hazards and gates+teleport between bell portals in the temple of time+press switches while the small ones can only press switches), ball and chain/morning star - destroy magical ice barriers and various objects+push certain blocks and pot-shaped statues+destroy cracked floors (can keep swinging it around your head to create a shield that damages enemies), spinner - spinning disc that lets you jump onto and off of wall rails (similar to a handicap lift but faster) as well as activate a couple of mechanisms that change the layout of rooms in the desert dungeon by moving it in place and mashing the button, boomerang variation which sort of combines the multi-target one from WW with the leaf from WW, iron boots variation which allow walking on walls and ceilings using magnetic surfaces - cool but too slow and you can't use ranged weapons for some reason, )
-Very good map system (togglable mini-map, three levels of zoom, show the basic layout+area exits+which door you exited last+dungeon doors(+treasure chests and the boss's location but you need to find the compass to see these as usual), )
-Nice cutscenes (mostly skippable) and lighting effects, nice animation besides the lack of VA and lipsyncing of it, Optional rumble feature, Surround sound option
-Mostly good bosses (Ganon's third phase (mounted), most of Zant's forms, sky temple flying lizardman (Aeralfos) mini-bosses, snow temple second phase (Yeta), temple of time first phase (giant spider), horseback fight and duels with the Bulblin king, second dungeon's mini-boss (leaning platform goron) and main boss, desert dungeon mini-boss)
-Can interact with some animals (pet goats, pick up dogs as well as throw bones for them to catch, pick up some cats)
-Mini-bosses
-Day/night cycle (OoT, each is about 8 mins long? (about twice as long as in OoT) - Enduro and Forbidden Forest, Some new enemies in some areas at night and houses in towns tend to be locked
-Interactive tutorials
-Some memorable characters (the youngest kid (the one who opens a shop), Midna (decent development and nuance, you don't quite know if she's evil at first which is interesting, she toys with you a lot for the first half of the game and also repeatedly tells you to go do things which you already know that you should do, ends up more endearing after a certain scene), thirsty goron, Yeto and Yeta)
-Mixes in a couple of flight segments where you ride an enemy creature for a bit
-Pretty good fortune teller hints (heart piece locations) - Zelda 3 (or Zelda 1 though they're not that good there)
-Pretty good escort mission segment (on horseback so it's fast-paced - only issue is how easy it is for Epona to stop from touching obstacles)
-Some interesting new enemies (the blobs/chus can (besides splitting and sometimes joining with each other) be scooped up and drunk after defeating them (don't have to process them here unlike in WW) - most heal you while purple has a random health effect/yellow works like lantern oil/the rare gold one both heals you and temporarily doubles your attack strength(=great fairy's tears effect), mounted archers, zant hands), more believable/immersive world (the world map isn't overly box- or oval-shaped finally, one pretty large town (castle town - plenty of NPCs moving around or doing other things here as well), the different "races" interact more with each other)
-Breaks up the division between hostile and friendly areas at times with enemies appearing in towns (Zelda 3) and NPCs living in a dungeon
-Nice rainstorm effect (castle tower)
-Boar riding segments (hard to control but lets you break wooden structures like a wrecking ball - weird that you can't break them with bombs though (and only some with the ball and chain))
-Some additional lore delivered via the mailman on the field over the course of the game (besides quest-related info)
-The dragon boss of sky temple appears and interrupts your progress once during that dungeon (Shinobi ARC)
-Fight alongside Zelda against Ganon (Wind Waker)
-Optional gauntlet dungeon (cave of ordeals in the desert) - FF5, D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, Lunar 2
-New quick-turn move for Epona but ironically it's a bit clunky to use (if you start holding forward right after doing it it doesn't work)
-Can throw rocks at NPCs but they don't tell you off (can also swing the sword and make some NPCs dodge it which is kinda funny)
-Can slide down ladders but upwards climbing is a bit slow
-Can call on a hawk in certain areas to fetch items and chickens from far away/high places (works like the boomerang besides one scene where you can attack with it but looks cool)
-Seems to borrow both the enemy encounter style and the world restoration theme from Okami (released ~5 months earlier)
-More scripted events in-between dungeons
