Donald in Maui Mallard/Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (SNES, 1996)
Graphics-8 Sound-7.5 Control-6.5 Challenge-6.5
Level Design-6.5 Frustration-8 Fun-6.5 Originality-5
Overall Score-6.5
+
Looks and sounds quite a bit better than on MD in most places
Different level design (somewhat larger levels)
Better bonus rounds (less frustrating)
Much easier to use swinging hooks (lvl 2, 4) and spinning platforms (lvl 1)
Turn into a pygmy
5-way targeting (why not 8-way though?)
Good variety overall
Longer ninja combo (4 vs 2)
Difficulty options
Great animation
More and different treasure (collect at least 50% for bonus rounds)
Combine three different weapons
Hidden items
Less annoying platforming in lvl 1
+/-
Password save (short)
Scrolls faster but not quite as smooth
Borrows elements from Earthworm Jim
-
Some control issues (somewhat sloppy hit detection (Donald misses enemies that are standing too close, unforgiving hit detection on items, hook swings), shorter Bo range makes it near impossible not to get hit by enemy ninja, much looser scrolling - gets very dizzying when turning around, can't set the fire button to where you want it (only a or b instead of x which would be optimal)
The lower resolution creates some leaps of faith
You get hit just from walking into pillars (doesn't happen in MD version)
You have to check the manual for some moves (easier to figure out here since the enemy ninja clones perform them)
Easier bosses
There's also an annoying animation causing delay when turning around in this version
The lvl 2 stone giant moves slower
Some cheap enemy placements (pygmies, piranhas, enemies appearing where you are jumping to)
Each level is divided into sections and you can't go back if you miss stuff
No boss theme
Tedious bungee jump sections and boss
Tedious water level (mainly due to only having 5-way targeting)
