X-Men 2: Clone Wars (MD, 1995)
Graphics-8.5 Sound-6.5 Control-7* Challenge-8.5* Story-5
Level Design-7 Frustration-9/8.5* Fun-6.5* Originality-6
Overall Score-6.5
* 1-player, sometimes depends on character chosen
+
Seven different playable characters (Magneto is unlocked after the third level) with some unique abilities to choose from
2-player co-op
More nimble characters than in the prequel
Some minor puzzles/tactical elements
Good animation and use of colour
Improved sound quality overall
Some good bosses
Some mini-bosses
Scaling and morphing effects
Stronger attacks when at full health (rewards tactical and skillful play but isn't properly balanced so the game becomes much harder if you don't play perfectly with weaker enemies taking several more hits to kill and therefore being able to hit you more easily as well)
Occasionally lets you switch characters before a boss
Some hidden or off the main path items here and there
+/-
Levels aren't designed for a specific character in terms of puzzles requiring unique abilities (some bosses are instead very resilient depending on your character/attack)
No save
No time limits (except for the rising acid in one stage)
While there's decent variation between levels each one is usually pretty repetitive by itself
Many enemies can be skipped using Nightcrawler
Strange way to start a game (goes right into the first level on boot-up, no menu or character selection screen until level 2, shows company logos after beating the first level)
Can't walk while crouching
Can't shoot while moving as Cyclops or Gambit
Beast and Psylocke don't have a fast horizontal mid-air attack (Psylocke can do it with her special attack but it doesn't work against robotic enemies) - At least they can dash but you get no invincibility time and it's a bit clunky (Beast jumps a little bit and Psylocke has some movement delay right afterwards, neither can cancel the dash mid-way to avoid enemies that appear in front of them)
Unlike in the prequel you now take damage simply from touching enemies
No six button support (could've been used for a run button, a smart bomb/support attack, a throw move, a map, etc.)
- Some tedious segments (boomerang throwing enemies, escape from stage 2, the falling rocks in stage 4 (outside the Aztec temple), most vertical platforming sections - mainly due to the loose camera, alien elevator - repetitive/easy)
Camera becomes more of an issue in 2-player due to lack of split screen + high speed + large sprites + quick auto-respawn close to each other if one character jumps downward ending up just slightly off screen - you really need to sync your movements to get a good flow going
Cheap hits (falling rocks, due to big sprites combined with loose scrolling, some shots from off-screen)
Unbalanced characters (Wolverine or Nightcrawler are usually superior to the others)
No difficulty options (no continues)
Checkpoints are pretty rare (sometimes one is put right before a boss, none in sub levels)
So-so jump controls for Magneto (slow and vertical focused, no real flight (can be added via a code), no double jump/somersault)
The story is now told through a separate mission screen and in text only
Safe spots at two of the bosses
Sometimes sloppy hit detection (plant explosions in the jungle, morphing yellow aliens when shooting them with Magneto)
Can't switch between characters on the fly without codes
Some annoying sfx/music
Minor slowdown at times
Unsatisfying ending
Missing some characters seen in the prequel (Storm, Rogue, Iceman, Archangel as support fire/smart bombs, Jean Grey as pick up support when falling into pits)
No double plane gameplay (see the prequel or Shinobi)
Can't charge while moving as Cyclops or Gambit
No control config
Bugs:
In 2-player (Wolverine and Nightcrawler only?), Nightcrawler can fall through the floor in stage 2 and then not be able to get back up
