Cyber Troopers Virtual-On (ARC, 1995/PS2, 2007)
Graphics-8 Sound-7.5 Control-6.5 Challenge-8 Story-5
Level Design-7 Frustration-8.5 Fun-6.5 Originality-6.5
Overall Score-6.5
+
Third person arena fighting
Decent arena level designs (ramps, small objects to take cover behind)
Strafing (dashing)
Fast paced and smooth
2-player vs. (link)
Very good art direction (gundam style mechs)
Bomb/stun attacks (knocks opponent over, can't be spammed)
Pretty good lighting and explosion effects
Context sensitive melee attack - Shinobi
Difficulty options (4 levels, time limit options, coin worth)
Replays of finishing moves (a bit choppy though)
8 playable characters (each has a fairly distinct playstyle though)
Space Harrier reference ("get ready")
PS2:
Detailed control config (map jump to a single button)
Remastered music and colors (not much of a difference)
Horizontal or vertical split screen option
FPS option
New modes (assault - no shooting unless you jump first, chibi characters, rank mode)
Sound test and art gallery
Display settings
+/-
No control explanation or training mode
Auto lock-on (triggers when using a ranged attack - you need to dash or jump for it to trigger though and sometimes you want to lock-on without attacking, also can't easily cancel the lock-on)
Need to both press the opposite direction and press a strafe button to stop dashing
No power ups or breakable parts in the environment?
No throwing or grabbing?
Can't steer while dashing (makes it hard to land melee hits)
Can't play as the boss characters, easy dash doesn't do anything? (PS2)
Very minor loading times (PS2 - about a second)
-
Annoying alarm sound when at low health (can't be removed on PS2 either)
Some control issues (delay when jumping and even more when jump attacking, can't momentum jump as some characters, can't cancel a dash if you start shooting until after the burst of shots is fired, can't quickly turn around without locking onto the enemy, both sticks do the same thing instead of having one of them let you look around)
No in-game story (the backstory is fairly complex for a fighting game)
Somewhat awkward jumping (press sticks in opposite directions)
Crouch & guard (PS2) is weird (can only guard when near the opponent, crouch does nothing except cancel jumps)
Shift doesn’t work? (PS2)
Can't choose restart from the pause menu or right after losing (PS2)
Notes:
-Black and white in PCSX2 unless you use software rendering (slows the game to half speed on a decent stationary PC),
-Can't jump in M2 emulator?
