Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (PS1, 1999)
Graphics-7.5 Sound-8 Control-7.5 Challenge-8
Level Design-8 Frustration-7.5 Fun-7.5/? Originality-7.5
Overall Score-7.5
+
Innovative trick mechanics
10 Licensed skaters and licensed OST (skate punk/ska themed)
Lots of moves for the time
Grind on rails and other objects
Manual or automatic acceleration option
Optional challenges (collect letters and boxes, hidden tape item, grind on specific objects, trick score quotas) - these unlock more courses (9 in total, 3 are contest courses), 2-player vs. "graffiti" mode (tag obstacles by doing tricks on them, split-screen) and trick attack mode and "horse" mode (take turns trying to pull off the best trick), free skate mode (no time limits or objectives), save replays (GT1), optional vibration, optional hints (not very useful though), breakable windows, power meter (easier to do tricks when powered up), some board customization, very good framerate and draw distance,
+/-
Over the top physics
Only one female skater
Jump at the top of ramps to go higher (a bit like Enduro Racer on SMS)
Have to jump off railings? (if you don't and lose too much speed you'll fall over)
Some blood (no health bars though fortunately),
-
No tutorial or in-game moves list
Hold jump/X to accelerate if it's manual (means you'll jump if you let go of the button)
Slow turning and it's hard to do finer turns in tighter spaces without running into something and changing direction
Sometimes odd physics (in certain parts of courses you'll jump a little and easily fall over even though it looked like you wouldn't)
The camera is somewhat delayed when turning
No difficulty options
