The Goonies (MSX, 1985 or 1986)
Graphics-6.5 Sound-7.5 Control-7.5 Challenge-7.5 Story-6
Level Design-6.5 Frustration-8 Fun-6.5 Originality-6.5
Overall Score-6.5
+ Gear (yellow and blue helmets - protect against falling stalactites and bats respectively, raincoats - protect against other hazards, shields - protect against projectiles, shoes - increase movement speed, purple spellbook - human enemies can't shoot anymore, other spellbooks - let you defeat a certain more easily, etc.), pretty good enemy AI (the human enemies), traps that also serve as moving platforms and block enemy projectiles, can destroy thrown bones, doors leading to sub areas, gear carries over to the next level, temporary time freeze item (clock), decent enemy variation
+/- Maze levels which are much bigger than in the NES version, password save which doesn't save your items, some enemies can't be killed (only knocked out), forced collecting (hostage rescue) to progress, locked doors (the locked chamber can either have a health potion or a child in it), a key can unlock any lock, no health refill after beating a level, the experience bar gives back a little bit of health when filled rather than increasing your character's level (can farm for health but it takes a while), coins only give points,
- No lives or continues, up to jump, can't carry more than one key at a time (some chambers have two locks), no maps, the game not showing which locked chambers have a potion in them slows the pacing down considerably, repetitive, some control issues(can't control jump height or length, can't move sideways in mid-air after jumping straight up, fall straight down after walking off of a ledge), some trial & error (some enemy placements and traps, some negative spellbooks - also permanent), pretty meh ending,
