Tekken 2 (PS1, 1996)
Graphics-8 Sound-8.5 Control-7 Challenge-7*
Level Design-7 Frustration-8** Fun-7.5** Originality-6
Overall Score-7.5
**1-player on default difficulty
+
Wide variety of characters (25 in total including the unlockables, most of them have their own style and stage) and moves
Command list in-game
Long and flashy combos
15 unlockable characters
Nice intro cutscene
Alternate outfits
Difficulty and control options
Some unintentionally (?) funny moves/sfx/cutscenes
2-player vs
Rearranged bgm which is better than the arcade original
Practice mode
Skippable staff roll
Good art direction overall
Good animation for the time
Decent lighting effects
Button configuration (can also map 2 buttons at once to one or more buttons for easier throws)
+/-
Unlimited continues
Can't cancel most moves (see Flashback-style games)
Some sexual/titillating aspects (kinda one-sided towards men)
Announcer sometimes says 'Great!' when the AI wins in single player arcade mode (wtf?)
Borrows features from Virtua Fighter 2 (escape-able throws, dodges, reversals/counters and side-rolling when lying on the floor)
Some moves like Jun's wrist chuck slam are kinda awkward to pull off with the default due to using the top and bottom face buttons the same time
-
Many shared moves between characters
Some hit detection problems (throwing is a bit glitchy when the opponent is jumping/getting up, devil's laser beam, when characters are attacking outside of the default gameplay plane, etc)
Takes very long to learn blocking and combo-breaking efficiently (sometimes easy for the enemy to make you block and then hit you again with a quick move or next part of a combo)
Often frustrating to watch a move being performed knowing you can't cancel it and that it's not going to connect
Overly fast and/or advanced timing on some moves (using an arcade stick is recommended)
Some overpowered moves or tactics
Too easy to do major damage with some characters to an opponent who's lying down
*Pretty random AI difficulty at times (sometimes gets a big challenge boost in the later matches)
Very simple arenas (no ring outs, no obstacles or different terrain effects)
Some backgrounds look like cheap movie/commercial sets
Some voices get tedious to hear after playing for a while
Some redundant moves
