Robocop (ARC, 1988)
Graphics-7.5 Sound-7 Control-7 Challenge-7 Story-6
Level Design-6.5 Frustration-7.5 Fun-6 Originality-6
Overall Score-6
+ Captures the atmosphere of the movie pretty well (features several voice samples from the movie - even entire sentences, decent cutscenes and art direction), the laser rifle, some innovative gameplay - QTE (press quickly to not get squeezed between two moving walls, makes Robocop break free using only his hands), bonus stage where you can refill your energy (pretty simple though, basically Duck Hunt without a light gun), lots of sprites on screen at once, move while shooting, some large sprites, difficulty options, the game remembers the direction you shot in last so you can keep shooting diagonally without holding a button or moving forward, a few 1-ups to collect, your health bar gets upgraded after each level
+/- Unlimited continues with respawn on the spot, fourth wall breaking (thank you for your co-operation),
- Moon jumps, some slowdown at times, trial & error (bosses, some projectiles can be blocked by shooting or even punching them), inconsistent jump controls (can't jump in stairs/escalators), can't move while crouching, some odd/cheap sounding sfx (human enemies death sound), gets repetitive after the first coupe of levels (repeats bosses, enemies and traps), somewhat slow paced (slow walking speed, need to take it slow to not get overwhelmed by enemies), short (6 short levels, takes less than 20 minutes to beat), some unavoidable hits, the hostage sequences could've been better (there's no way to fail rescuing the hostage), can't move backwards in a level, can't shoot diagonally downwards?, voice samples sometimes repeat several times during a boss fight
