ARPG/Action Adventure gameplay (dialogue trees - pick between subjects (can be repeated if you missed something), trading, can withdraw your weapon and toggle between combat and non-combat stances (hold this button to aim while holding a gun, NPCs sometimes get scared if you walk round with your gun drawn), reputation system (can attack NPCs which makes it harder to gain info and help from others - if you're doing good people start fanboying over you and make bowing gestures/do really bad and they do "slit your throat" gestures and kick towards you, Shamaz/priests and other important NPCs are aware of everything said about you and what happens in their region such as enemy troop movements), upgradeable weapons (pistol magazine, automatic pistol (UZA-SH/Tracer) rate of fire+added ricochet, rocket launcher (HAWK-MK8/Perforator) rocket and load speed, mine launcher (LN-Duo 500) has different triggering methods (lvl 0=proximity mine/lvl 1=timed/lvl 2=on impact, flame thrower (FT-74) delay and reach, sleeping dart effectiveness (SLNT-B, also uses sniper scope)), NPCs move around and sometimes perform activities when you're not talking to them (one does pushups and another smokes his pipe in the first village, priests do yoga, scheduled enemy supply convoys, working farmers and slaves, etc), )
Quest log ("note pad"; automatically summarizes quests though in some cases important info is missing) and lexicon features (while NPCs speak english they also use many made up terms which are translated here)
Scanner/advisor feature (notifies you of nearby items - Metal Mutant and Saboteur)
Pretty detailed mini-map for sub areas (zoomable, shows layout with color coded terrain types and creatures in 2D (neutral creatures are yellow, NPCs blue and enemies red), semi-transparent, no topography (see Hunter or Virus)) and compass (top of HUD)
Fully voiced NPCs
Parallel world theme (main protag is sent to investigate as the portal is expanding and eating up earth - gets separated from his crew)
Control config (including camera movement speed/mouse sensitivity)
Can load a game directly from the launch menu in Windows
Long draw distance and detailed environments for the time (pretty blurry textures though and various objects have strangely uneven edges to them)
Can raid enemy supply convoys to make the outposts in the same area weaker over time
Stealth element (decent but can't cling to walls or lean around corners)
Pretty impressive CGI cutscenes (good camera work and overall animation, snappy dialogue, decent-good VA)
Can aim while moving in TP or FP view but it doesn't work well when aiming vertically in TP view and FP view is too sensitive and stiff with a controller - some aim assist in TP view but only vs small enemies like spiders?
Some interesting items/gadgets (EVD/x-ray binoculars w/ zoom feature and lock-on (K key, have to be stationary though) - get them during the tutorial, proton phase shifter (pps)/invisibility - while you can use objects during it you cannot collect items nor use a weapon or fight barehanded, Ubik-0A/hologram device - decoy that moves towards and lures enemies, C4 explosives - you can set them off either by firing at them or by using a long-range detonator (Clapr-T/remote detonator item) or a proximity detonator/tripwire device (THNDR-STP33; triggers an explosive within its range when someone passes nearby it) - can be used to open chests and doors+remove some obstacles, F-link/teleporter beacons (they work like the one in Flashback and are found in the second area and you can use 3+ to teleport back and forth between several locations, can only be used within the same world/sub area), proxi-130 hf/tracker - tracks nearest enemy and shows a spinning arrow below your avatar pointing towards it, oxygen tank - stay longer under water, fruit that needs to be catched as it hovers to the ground since it explodes on impact)
Can ride a certain animal (Twôn-Ha - similar to a camel or ostrich, have to buy it first)
Can climb buildings (via ledges) and jump across rooftops in cities
Mostly skippable cutscenes (a few in-game ones aren't)
Inventory hotkeys (F1-12)
One weapon is called the "boomer gun" (LN-Duo 500/mine launcher)
Can crawl (but not crouch)
Can skip individual lines/text boxes during dialogue
Some large cities
Basic crafting of weapon ammo (give found materials to smiths and they'll do it for free)
Some decent puzzles (four note musical puzzle in Okaar, physics-based "stop the swinging box" puzzle, place the essence stones in the temple slots according to a stone slab puzzle, temple door combination in Okasankaar)
Sometimes good enemy AI - dodges a lot and groups tend to spread out and sometimes encircle you in more maze-like areas
Some memorable characters (Zeo, Oru)
Some nice visual effects (footsteps in the snow and visible breath in the same area, moving trough gates, sunlight and its reflection on water, bombing a lake and seeing all the fish float up to the surface, some explosions)
Semi-dynamic music changes as you move into and out of combat (one track fades out and the other starts/fades in while ambient sfx play)
Some moral choices (thief)
Shows your completion percentage before the staff roll
The dance party scene and fourth wall breaking monologue by Slade after the staff roll
One unexpected plot twist (Jan's betrayal leading to the destruction of the first village)
Makes you feel vulnerable by trapping you and temporarily removing all but the first gun at one point
+/-
Non-linear structure with soft gating in the form of enemies and money (sometimes way too much to deal with in your current state; can take on a variety of different quests in any order in each area, warp gates/gateways (daokas) connect the different sub areas - Talanzaar is a hub of sorts as it connects to three other areas (not Ranzaar/the first village and not Okaar which you get to via Okasankaar; Shamazaar also connects to three other areas but two of the gates are in an enemy temple and lead to soldier camps in other areas) - these gates look inspired by the movie Stargate
Rugged main char who cracks bad jokes and looks angry and surprised at the same time in cutscenes
Save anywhere (9 nameable slots and it shows a screenshot from where you saved+date but not exact time - pretty limited name lengths though and in-game you can't see the dates, can't be near enemies or "energy")
Can zoom out very far behind your avatar when in an open space (some issues - see below)
Very forgiving hit detection when walking off a ledge
Some hard enemies already in the first area after the starting one (you are given advice on how to avoid them though) and the game gets easier for a while if you focus on buying and upgrading weapons
The map rotates when you do - an option to stop it would've been good but you do have the compass
Limited oxygen under water
Forced tutorial however it's short and you can do all but one sub task without talking to Jan
Some fall damage - even from fairly short heights
HP restoration from Shamaz/priest NPCs
Can't climb the short but steep terrain in Shamazaar for example (can jump over it while riding a Twon-ha though)
Loot from enemies and NPCs doesn't correspond with what they're carrying (can't grab the weapon an enemy was using or the wares a salesman was selling)
You die pretty quickly even to the early giant spider creatures
Can't lightly throw dynamite forward before setting it off - only drop it where you're standing
Some healing points (some priests can heal you without cost such as the one in Okriana city (Talanzaar))
Features a bit of transgender/intersex stereotype in Niika
Unlimited carry capacity for ammo and consumable items
Various fetch quests and some overly easy search & destroy quests (static difficulty so if you went past Shamazaar and then back it will be pretty easy)
No dodge/block/roll moves
Can't play as the other crew members (one of them makes sense considering the story but Wolfe/Marion could've been playable as a different perspective to the story - she is pretty active towards the end though)
Sometimes cheesy/funny lines ("Deliver him extremely harmed, if you please" follower by a quick zoom into the villain's face, "Yo, shorty" - Slade, )
The LN 500/mine launcher is kinda hard to use and doesn't even do that much damage vs some enemies like spiders at lvl 0 - gets more effective later
Very vague world map (just shows a basic sketch of each area and where they are in relation to each other)
Can't fight alongside the people during the uprising before the finale but the cutscene is pretty good
-
Too many serious bugs (see below)
Somewhat slow on foot movement (jumping is slightly faster) and you can't ride the Twon-ha in some areas
Various interface/control issues (have to use the mouse to fire the LN 500 for some reason - doesn't fully charge with an XB360 controller & joytokey, a more zoomed out view reverts to being very zoomed in when in tighter spaces or indoors and doesn't go back after moving into a more open one - rather annoying in Talanzaar for example, inconsistent hit detection when trying to climb buildings in Talanzaar or the mountain in Shamazaar, can't examine items and there's no basic description when selecting one in the sub menu - see the manual, can't jump while carrying a detonator, can't lock on with the x-ray binoculars and shoot at the same time nor can you move while using it, can't aim vertically without going into FP view (you only look up/down in TP view), when aiming in FP view your gun and its laser sight moves out of view if aiming too low and you can't aim straight down or up, lacking jump height control and you can't jump while in combat stance (which is required to shoot), aiming in FP view is too stiff with a controller, can't toggle the mini-map size while aiming a weapon, hard to tell some NPCs apart (names above their heads shown by the scanner after talking to them would've helped - or they could've let you type in map markers like in System Shock or they could've updated the note pad with location info so you didn't have to keep asking NPCs) - the name problem is fixed in the 2017 remake, can't talk to NPCs/use an f-link teleporter/save while riding a Twon-ha, have to go into the inventory to use keys on locked doors, can load and start a new game via the pause menu (esc) but not save - have to equip a crystal and press E which isn't explained in-game and is also a bit slow, icon driven inventory without text before picking a sub menu - takes a bit of getting used to, can't pause lines during dialogue and they're timed even outside of cutscenes - gotta read fast, sub menus don't wrap around, easy to get semi-stuck on corpses and some uneven terrain (walking at an angle into walls tends to make you stop), sometimes you can't move up against a wall while shooting as its hit box extends further out, no quick camera turn button, can't use the mouse in menus, somewhat slow mounting/dismounting of the Twon-ha, the mini-map being in 2D is a minor issue in some vertical-based areas)
Sometimes dated visuals (facial animation is a bit dated in cutscenes and very dated in-game (main char looks surprised), your avatar's running animation looks kind of silly, if you stand too close to an NPC before engaging in dialogue you'll see an awkward animation where he/she backs away a couple of steps)
Uneven voice volume (too low when outside of dialogue mode)
Some trial & error (the fetch quest giver for an item somewhere outside of the desert city walls gives no directions so you have to circle around the whole city, Oru's gun shows up in the item inventory rather than the weapon inventory - have to use it quickly to survive the Gorgor, can't use the enemy tracker on the plant enemies in Okasankaar, can't clear up the well with dynamite? - tried 3 but nothing seemed to happen, you'll be attacked as you enter Okasankaar, walk off the map and into the desert in Talanzaar and you die without warning, explosions from explosives do high damage from further away than it looks like)
Some annoying voices (twon-ha salesman and some others seemingly voiced by the same guy)
Some backtracking (the gear salesmen in the desert city only sell a couple of weapons/upgrades each+are spread out all over the city+some are even tricky to find - there also should've been one in Okasankaar, if you mess up the essence stone puzzle in Shamazaar, some moving back and forth between NPCs for various quests)
Sometimes stupid enemy AI (some other enemies in a group sometimes aren't alerted for 5+ seconds if you shoot at one of them, some react very slowly when shot at, some get themselves stuck in narrow spaces)
Some plot/setting/scripting oddities (Jan's father (Zokrym) reveals their hiding place to Slade in the beginning but doesn't trust him enough to show who the villain is and what you need to do to save the world until near the end?, the second event with Marion going off and attacking the NW temple in Shamazaar seems rushed - can't fight alongside your allies and after taking over the temple you don't really discuss what this accomplished or what to do next, finding Marion in Talanzaar is pretty tedious - can't get proper directions to her locations unlike with other NPCs (sometimes you even have to ask an NPC for other people before the relevant one shows up in the dialogue tree - this even happens for other NPCs later on!) and you have to get rather close to the NPC who calls for you to lead you to the second one, can't talk to the priest and a few other NPCs when first getting to Cyana in Okasankaar (to trigger the "free us from the soldiers" quest), Slade is a bit of an ass to Marion for seemingly no reason after the two rejoin in Adelpha and before she dies as well - so-so voice acting when she's dying as well and apparently the priests couldn't heal her, 50G is barely enough for a meal but 100G is more than enough?, can't steal back your gear from or punish the gear salesman somehow)
Can't ask where the recreator/smith is in Cyana
No CGI cutscene for the ending
Not enough enemy variety in the late game
Bugs:
-Sometimes freezes when giving the Okaar map with markings on it to the musician (Shadi) in Talanzaar
-The door to the walled in area with a dragon-like boss in Okaar sometimes closes when loading a game right next to it (no way to re-open it besides re-loading?)
-The small boulders for the boulder puzzle in Okaar can glitch out and get "stuck" on the big one
-The game crashed once when trying to pay a gear salesman in Talanzaar because a Twon-ha was near me - I got stuck on the animal during the purchase animation
-The game froze once when loading a game during the Gorgor fight which forced me to restart my PC
-One of the gear salesmen in Talanzaar can get stuck inside the wall/ceiling making it impossible to buy from him - tried re-entering the area, reloading the save, punching and using dynamite on him
-The sneaking tutorial can glitch out if you don't run up to Jan immediately after grabbing the fruit (have to reload from before first trying it or restart)
-If you die and cancel the menu that pop ups the game gets stuck (can't re-access the main menu)
-Enemies sometimes get teleported from the ground onto the roof of a building when moving against its wall in Talanzaar or get stuck inside walls
-The caravan chest on a wagon in Talanzaar can't be destroyed by explosives but can be destroyed if you aim at a certain point with the first gun (nothing in it anyway though)
-Sometimes can't speak to an NPC again right after doing so (not game breaking though)
-At one point early on the starting gun had an inconsistent rate of fire (first you could shoot 1 bullet, then 3 in a row, then a couple more and then you need to reload) - fixed itself somehow
-Sometimes the gamsaav causes flashing white lights or constant white light when looking in certain directions after using it
-Can't grab onto the uppermost platform at the platform path leading to the altar near Okasankaar's village - have to make the jump fully despite being able to grab every previous platform there
-At one point I ended up high in mid-air and took a lot of damage after teleporting from Ranzaar (area 1) to Shamanzaar
Notes:
-XB360 controller support doesn't work (Win 10) - have to use joytokey or xpadder
-Gave up about 70% into the game (almost finished with Okaar) and checked a playthrough instead
