Impressive Oki MSM5232 Music (ARC)
This is a square wave-based additive synthesis chip from the early '80s. 8 channels. It was always coupled with 1-2 AY-3 chips and sometimes 1-2 DACs when used for game OSTs although samples were used sparsely and only for percussion it seems like.
The additive synthesis works like this: 1-4 octaves of a square wave can be stacked for a single instrument, letting it mimic the 25% square waves of the NES and GB, or basic keyboard and organ sounds if the square waves are stacked in a certain way. This can also be done to the noise for a bit more complexity there as well.
It was used as one of 8 oscillators in the Korg Poly 800 synth. The image links to an article on the Poly 800, which descibes some aspects of this chip and the rest I learned from messing a bit with it in Furnace tracker.
The later (?) 6502 and 6295 chips seem completely sample-based.
