The Misadventures of Flink (MD/MCD, 1994)
Graphics-8.5 Sound-6.5 Control-7 Challenge-7
Level Design-7 Frustration-8 Fun-7 Originality-6
Overall Score-7
+
Spells
Immersive world with a unique feel to it
Decent variation
Cool bosses
Pretty long
Steal flying machines from certain enemies (New Zealand Story)
Excellent art direction and great color use overall
MCD version:
Better music
New intro and ending cutscenes
+/-
Very similar mechanics to Magical Quest on the SNES (carry and throw objects as well as most enemies)
Hub map (SMW)
No manual acceleration control
-
Trial & error spell mixing (limited ingredients)
Some gameplay elements feel underused (quick grow and shrink spells only used once or twice)
A bit slow-paced
Flink accelerates slower than the enemies (annoying when gathering ingredients from enemies) - fixed in a hack
No save feature
Lacking replay value (no difficulty options and a lack of secrets)
Sometimes sloppy hit detection around platform edges
Can’t make beaten enemies respawn by moving away a bit (would’ve been useful for certain platforming puzzles)
So-so musical instruments
