Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (NES, 1987)
Graphics-7.5 Sound-8.5 Control-9 Challenge-8.5 Story-7
Level Design-7.5 Frustration-9 Fun-7 Originality-8
Overall Score-7
+
Great caricatures (expressive and large sprites)
Good variety for what it is
Humoristic
Suprisingly deep combat for its time (intricate tactics to get better times, left punch is somewhat faster but weaker than right punch, star system (gain uppercut moves), proper counter punches (counter on the same side that your opponent just punched from to do more damage), delayed punches etc.)
Pretty fast paced and intense
+/-
Very strict and unintuitive patterns to getting the best times
-
Trial & error (twitchy animation makes it hard to react to new moves, strict patterns to beating most opponents)
Repeating enemy characters
Coaches tips are pretty useless
Tactics to get stars are sometimes not failsafe and the right punch doesn't always do more damage
