Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (VGA)(PC, 1991)
Graphics-7.5 Sound-7.5 Control-6 Challenge-6 Story-6
Level Design-6 Frustration-7.5 Fun-6 Originality-7
Overall Score-6
+
Improved audio/visuals and interface (on par with SQ1 VGA)
Game speed options (can't speed up the in-game cutscenes though)
Some good humour (demeaning, silly, sarcastic, bizarre, the respawn scene)
Skippable text boxes (click or press Enter)
Decent art direction
Many ways to die
Can cancel an action after Larry starts walking towards the object you're trying to interact with
Cinematic touches for major dialogue scenes (close ups, animated sprites)
+/-
Fairly open ended beginning (you're limited by money though since you can barely get anywhere on foot)
Eve is black in this version
At one point you essentially drug (Spanish fly pills) one of the women in hopes of having sex with her
The ending scene isn't believable at all
Would've been nice to keep the text parser as an optional means of interaction
-
Some interface/control issues (no action hotkeys, can’t quickly cycle through inventory items in the quick item slot (using the RMB for example), can't skip walking animations or in-game cutscenes?, lack of features to help with exploration/pixel hunting (hot spots - see DotT, glow effect - see Simon the Sorcerer) though you can usually look at the general area and get a decent description of it), can't choose not to buy anything after initiating conversation with Lefty? (Esc makes you buy whiskey)
Trial & error (easy to miss the rope/ribbon and you can't go back into the suite if you leave, if you forget to take off the rubber separately after buying sex you'll be caught by the police when leaving lefty's (apparently Larry keeps it on and visible, somehow), can't protect your wine from the cab driver?, no effect from buying everyone a drink at lefty's, traffic that kills you immediately, flushing the toilet at lefty's kills you (no chance to escape), fights with punks to the left and right of the starting screen)
Limited dialogue options (you can only choose between locations to go by cab or what to give to NPCs, potentially changing what's said next)
Quite a few NPCs can't be interacted with
No double speed option in ScummVM?
Some animations drag on a bit in this version
Fairly easy to accidentally skip unexpected text box pop-ups
Somewhat tedious fetch questing for Fawn (the gold digger, easy to miss the diamond ring and the number to the Ajax liquor store (makes no sense that you can't order it from the hotel but at least there's a joke to it))
No alternate way to make money? (need to gamble)
Sometimes sloppy hit detection (phone, hooker, etc.)
Bugs:
-Crashes when you can't pay the taxi in ScummVM
