+
Some interesting bosses
Jump/speed shoes
Cart ride segment
Different level design from other versions
Difficulty options (Hard mode adds many enemies and some later enemy types to earlier levels)
A few shortcuts and hidden items added
Mostly satisfying sfx
Decent animation, Fairly expressive sprites

+/-
No auto-fire or rate of fire upgrade
Fairly easy to rack up extra lives
Time limit on the shoes and on weapons
One hit kills

-
Slow default walking speed
Trial & error (leaps of faith, boss patterns, sometimes cheap enemy or trap placement, the cart ride segment)
Odd jump mechanics (very vertical like in Contra), Can’t adjust jump height (not even with the shoes))
Not quite as varied as other versions
No weapon inventory
Some dead space
Only 3 music themes in-game, Drab and mostly dark colours
Lacks some details seen in other versions
Some removed 1-ups plus harder paths to where they were on Hard (makes it pointless to even move towards them)
Some slow parts with moving platforms or multiple spiked pillars in a row
Sometimes uneven difficulty curve (some later segments and bosses are pretty easy)
