E-SWAT: City Under Siege (MD, 1990)
Graphics-7 Sound-8 Control-6.5 Challenge-7.5
Level Design-6.5 Frustration-8 Fun-7 Originality-6
Overall Score-7
+
Good bosses overall
Good variety
Some cool weapons
3-way targeting
Turn into a cyborg after 2 stages
Difficulty options (easy/normal/hard)
Draws inspiration from Robocop and Terminator
Good voice samples
Jet pack (usually limited to a quickly draining and slowly recharging energy bar)
Weapon inventory
Keep all unequipped weapons after losing a life
Move while crouching and charge while moving
+/-
Might've been more interesting to have the robot suit as a power up instead
No knockback and very short invincibility time
-
Stiff control (can't turn around mid-air with the jetpack, long cooldown and delay on some weapons, you can't fire while doing a high jump)
Gets much harder by the 6th stage
Some cheap hits (can’t look up/down, scrolling is a bit loose so it's hard to react to some hazards, some boss patterns, can't shoot down in mid-air or while riding the elevator in stage 2)
Rarely uses much of the MD colour palette
No drum samples used for the music
