_Darkwing Duck (NES, 1992)
Graphics-7 Sound-7 Control-7.5 Challenge-7.5 Story-5
Level Design-7 Frustration-8 Fun-7 Originality-4
Overall Score-7
+
Blocking (pretty useless and can be distracting as it overrides jumping during its animation - fixed in GB version) and ducking moves,
Mega man/duck tales-style gameplay
Choose your own path (three stages at a time)
Some optional items in spots that are harder to get to
Spikes don't kill outright
Some good bosses
Pretty much instant respawn after death (at the previous checkpoint)
+/-
No motorbike/airship levels
Can’t shoot while blocking
Ammo based special weapons
Respawning enemies (see Mega Man)
-
Simple bosses overall
Short
Somewhat stiff controls (jumping up/down from hanging below a platform, see blocking above)
Can't shoot while walking or move while ducking
Somewhat worse presentation than in the DuckTales games (in-game graphics to start off the intro, no story progression after the first three levels are completed, ‘’OK!’’)
Repetitive backgrounds
Doesn’t quite capture the atmosphere of the cartoon
Some very annoying (MM3 green guy style) enemies that take too many hits to kill and are re-used here and there (you're better off avoiding some of them)
Some trial & error (moving platform and duck tales-style hook grappling segments, wheel physics (need to walk along with the wheel to keep moving), some enemy spawning points, boss patterns, can’t move back down in vertically scrolling segments)
Annoying speech sound
Somewhat sloppy hit detection on larger sprites (ghosts)
No weapon inventory (see Mega Man)
Heavy gas weapon is too weak against most enemies
