Sunset Riders (SNES, 1993)
Graphics-7.5 Sound-8 Control-6.5 Challenge-7/8 Story-4
Level Design-7 Frustration-8/9 Fun-(7.5) Originality-6
Overall Score-7
+
8-way targeting
Four different characters (spread vs rate of fire - shotgun is better in 1-player)
Difficulty options (more enemies and harder bosses on Hard)
Pick up and throw the enemies' dynamite
Decent variety
Pretty fast paced and sometimes intense
Comical tone
2-player co-op
Some good bosses
Bonus level (a bit lame though as it's so simple)
+/-
Racial stereotypes
Small hitbox on characters
No graphical updates (shading, color count, animations)
Invincible when jumping up/down a level or from a rope
Faster shot the closer your distance to the target
No stage before fourth boss
No ending on Normal mode (when I first beat Normal the game looped and had harder bosses but it still said try Hard at the ending)
Odd color choices for characters and some enemies
Can't move backwards in a level
-
Some control issues (very limited jump control (no height control, vertically focused like in Contra), slow movement speed (makes the fifth (Whip guy) and sixth (Indian) boss very frustrating), clunky slide move (need to press forward, can't cancel it or change direction, set length), can't stand still and shoot diagonally)
Only one weapon per character (and it only has two upgrades, rapid fire + better spread)
Trial & error (boss patterns, some enemy positions)
Explosions on stage 7 (horseback) obscure the action too much
Extremely pixelated explosion from dynamite
Pretty short (8 stages where one of them is only a boss fight)
Somewhat uneven difficulty (Indian boss)
